Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 78: Across the Void (2)

The journey across the isle of ice was short but sweet with Luna in particular enjoying it. Only one other creature seemed to be enjoying the cold, that being the giant trunked beast who similarly to Luna shared an ice attunement of some kind.

Most other beast simply shivered and pushed on eager to be out of this frozen rock.

Eventually the enlarged party did arrive at the location of yet another mana string, this one however didn't point directly across the canyon but instead pointed down and to an angle.

This region of the giant valley was as said before littered with islands that floated above the void. Whilst none of the islands extended up above the proverbial lip of the cliff, many littered its depths stretching far beyond any beings eye sight.

And the land that Violet had selected to travel to next was one such location. It was a lush island full of trees, plants and other flora. It was also one of the spots that Violet had spotted a few creatures travel through. She hoped that they wouldn't run into any as she was hoping for a simple journey, but she didn't think that they would be so lucky.

The group had to wait for some time before the pull turned into a push for the string and they were able to once more traverse the void. Waisting no more time our companions and their hesitant followers crossed the gap and were welcomed into a new environment.

The sudden change from bitter cold to a warm humid jungle atmosphere was jarring for all beings but they quickly adapted, long being used to the strange environments that were found within the Elemental Valleys. As they all carefully observed the undergrowth and kept an eye out for any attacks they slowly spread out and began to move forward after the dragon who took charge in locating the next spot to travel from.

Like this their journey continued. The enlarged group stuck together and quickly learnt the rules of traversing this domain by paying close attention to what the dragon did and did not do. One overly enthusiastic beast got stuck of waiting apparently on the 4th island and decided the just brave the gap and leapt forwards when the strings were moving in the wrong way. Its scratches of panic as it plummeted down into the endless void acted as a great deterrent for any other beasts to do their own thing.

They encountered no opposition until the 6th island that the group traveled to, this particular island was a swamp environment with stagnant water and thick tree roots making up the ground upon which they had to move through.

Along the side of the larger group a cat like beast was making its way forward when its fur suddenly stood on end and it let out a yowl of shock a moment before a reptilian beast shot out of the water below it with its jaws extended. Mere moments before its jaw closed around the cat which was only just beginning to react to the sudden assult a plane of nothingness appeared inbetween the two beasts.

It momentarily blocked the closing jaws of the crocodile beast, providing just enough time for the cat to leap away from the attack. The shield that Violet had hastily summoned did not last very long though and it soon shattered under the immense force of the crocodiles bite. As the mighty maw snapped shut the water beneath the large group began to roil and froth before dozens of beasts emerged all around the assembled beasts.

A momentary stand off was held as both sides observed each other in undisguised hostility. It would appear that the denizens of this domain had finally shown themselves and were finally ready to challenge them on their right to travel through their home.

The fragile peace was broken by a resounding boom as half the head of one beast was destroyed by a spear of void. The impacted beast was thrown back with blood spraying everywhere and a half muted cry of pain resounded.

From that moment pandemonium was unleashed. Violet and Luna dove forward to their nearest foe, ice coalescing around one whilst a coating of void covered the other. Together they clashed with the swamps defenders.

Behind them the other beasts reacted, the wolves fur sparked with lightning before arcs of it lashed out at any foe unlucky enough to be too close to them momentarily stunning them long enough for the pack to close in and tear into them with claw and tooth.

A giant trunk lashed out with surprising speed wrapping around one of the crocodiles before whipping to one side and sending the unfortunate beast flying into and through a nearby tree. At the same time it stomped one of its powerful legs down crushing another beneath its immense weight.

The cat that had been saved by Violet dove straight at the beast that dared to attack it, blades of wind leading the charge and digging deep into the thick scaled hide of the crocodile and drawing blood.

All around battles were waged between the crocodiles and the invading beasts. Whilst the invaders would never normally work together, in this strange place and under these particular conditions a hesitant alliance had been formed. Whilst they didn't exactly co-ordinate their attacks they didn't hider each other and where appropriate would intervene in a nearby battle if possible.

This unusual union of desperate beasts was spearheaded by one beast in particular. The void dragon. She who actively helped the nearby beasts with a timely bolt or shield, her rallying aura that bolstered any flagging friendly whilst simultaneously weakening her foes. Her mere presence inspired loyalty and reverence for most beasts. For whilst dragons, in particular a true wild dragon had not been seen in most of the assembled beasts lives. They all instinctively knew one thing, that the being before them was a true apex beast. Whilst she may be young and in some cases weaker than a couple of the assembled beasts, they knew that this was only a temporary state.

And so long as the dragon before them viewed them as friendly they all knew that they would be stupid to not do the same.

And so it was that in the middle of a system sanctioned event that would normally turn beast savage and untrusting of any and everyone else. A strange alliance was in the early stages of forming, none of the assembled beasts knew what this would mean but for as long as they had a shared goal that did not conflict with each others none would break it.

And whilst the situation was still forming the intrepid and mostly unaware leader of this alliance was happily engaging in a slaughter of her own.
