Chapter 124: Secrets of the Thicket
With one successful hunt down the group pressed on. They slowly worked through the dense forest, staying as hidden as they could be as they stalked their prey.
Their was a distinct lack of regular beasts present, as the day passed by they failed to encounter a single beast. As for monsters… well they encountered plenty of them.

Luna too leveled up to level 69, it was quite nice.
With each horror that the group fought they slowly refined their approach to beating them. Luna still remained the deciding factor in each fight, her ice was simply too effective against them.
And it was Luna that actually figured out the reason that her attacks were so effective. The answer was quite simply really, whilst the horrors were covered in a thin membrane of their icor, which was what absorbed some of the magic the rest of the party cast at them. The reason it was no effective against Luna's attacks was because that membrane simply froze over when it came into contact with Luna's arctic ice.
It seemed that the absorptive properties of the Icor was considerably hampered when in a solid state.
Still that was a great boon, and when coupled with Luna's blessing of the Arctic. It allowed the group to get up close in mele with greater ease. Her blessing produced a passive chill that helped counter the icor's effectiveness.
It was not perfect, but it did a great job in aiding the others.
Thanks to that, and the teamwork of the group, they made good progress and were able to slaughter 6 more horrors on that first day of hunting. Bringing their total kills to 8.
They retreated back to the cave that night, but once the morning came they returned with vigor back to the thicket in search of more monsters to hunt.
The group repeated this routine for the next couple of days. Each time they would venture into the forest, they would push in further, slay more monsters and steadily grow stronger.
Come the 4th day of delving into this section of the lake filled region the group began to sense something strange coming from deeper within the thicket.
It was a pervasive feeling of wrongness. It seemed to scratch at their skin, urging them to turn around and flee. Yet they refused, by this point they knew that something was deeply wrong here. And whilst it may not be the smartest thing for them to try and resolve, Violet was insistent.
The wild dragon felt an inate sense of responsibility for eradicating this wrongness. It was not something that she could properly explain, yet her instincts screamed at her, insisting that she stamp out that which is causing the phenomena.
Luna too was feeling something similar, with her being just as attuned to the natural world as Violet by now, thanks in no small way due to her bond with the dragon. She too desired to figure and and resolve the issue at its root. The other two were much less receptive to this course of action.
Still with Violet and Luna helming the charge they still followed. Whilst they may only be put off by the wrongness, they did understand that something had to be done about it, else this entire region be overrun by monsters. A situation that none would want to allow.
The 5th day of the hunt they ventured deeper than ever. Having mostly secured a route through the trees by now, the group was able to make good time in the morning. Easily entering the thickest part of the forest they had come across in the thicket.
More monsters called this area home and furious battles were fought. Each time a victory was secured the group were forced to retreat and wait some time for the approaching monsters to disperse. It was frustrating that it had to be done, yet non wanted to face a full group of them just yet.
They could now handle a couple of them at once now, yet they still did not wish to push their luck.
When they slew the latest beast and after awaiting the swarming monsters to disperse back to whence they came. Violet glanced over at her status, smiling at the rapid progress she had made these past few days.

Her strength had grown considerably now, and the next evolution was already getting closer. She could practically taste it. Granted it was getting harder to level up, but that was only to be expected.
Still if they continued onwards at this rate she hoped that she would be able to evolve within a week!
The group moved forwards with practiced ease, making no sound and moving from shadow to shadow. Soon however, they emerged from the dense tree cover and found themselves in a clearing that surrounded a small lake.
However, this was no ordinary lake. For this was the source of the oppressive wrongness that pervaded this area. The water held no inlet or outlet. It looked more like a natural spring pond, the rain still fell in its persistent fashion, having never let up for even a moment in over a week.
Yet it was what was found within the lake that seemed to be the epicentre of the issues. A tree sprouted from the centre of the pond, yet this tree was not truly alive. Its bark was a scared mess, dozens of rents and cuts marring its disfigured black bark, each of the wounds was leaking black sap that flowed down its trunk like small rivers of corruption.
The tainted sap then flowed freely into the pond, its once clear waters now stagnated and infused with the corrupted sap.
To one side of the pond the group watches as a bark horror claws its way out of the putrid water, its fau black covered limbs acting as crude fasimilies of arms and legs. It feels weak, yet its strength seems to balloon as it absorbed the wrongness that permitted from the central tree. Then it simply wanders off into the forest.
The group stands at the edge of the tree line, sober expressions of their faces. Not for the fact that they have seemingly found the spawning point of the monsters, or its corrupted origin. No they are concerned because as soon as they wandered close to clearing they felt something other than the wrongness, they had just felt the presence of a being in its 4th evolution.
