Chapter 117: Lay of the Land
As evening transitioned into night time the group organised a watch rotation between them, they would each take a two hour shift thus allowing them all to have 6 hours of rest. As they leveled up they did naturally need sleep less and less, to that point that our companions could probabally go for a couple of days with no sleep without too much issue. Regardless though they all enjoyed sleeping far too much to want to give it up.
Luna took the first watch and spent it curled up in Violet's embrace, then it was Violet's turn, followed by Rhyana with Susan taking the final shift. She also chose to cook up a breakfast for the group to help wake them all up, something which gained her thanks from everyone.
With morning thought came the decision of what they would do for the day. "I think we should spend today and maybe tomorrow just scouting, we need to know more about this place and what beasts live here. We need to be smart about what we hunt, and where we hunt them. Last thing we want is for a random strong beast to show up whilst we are mid fight." Shared luna.
Nodding in agreement Violet spoke up with her own input. "We definitely should scout. But we should try to clear out any troublesome foes that live nearby whilst we do so."
Seeing that the other two seems happy enough to go along with their plans the group got ready to go scouting.
As they exited the cave some grumbles were had as they once more emerged into a consistent drizzle of rain. The two dragons weren't that bothered but the two girls wearing clothes were less than impressed.
At least until Violet pointed out that Luna could just leave her Arctic blessing active, and it should cover her in ice which should block the rain from getting her wet.
And to Luna's delight it worked, her body became coated in a thin layer of ethereal ice that acted as a shield of sorts for the rain. Seeing that Susan also activated her own water cloaking skill, this coated her body in a thin layer of water. Whilst both skills did require a constant infusion of mana to keep active, the actual amount needed was quite insignificant when left in a semi dormant state. But that state was prefect for the girls needs so it worked out quite nicely.
Soon enough though the group was moving steadily through the surroundings. They chose to first circle the hill they were now calling their home, searching for any other caves or other spots that beast may call home. Thankfully though it would seem that they held the only cave, so they should have to worry about other beasts residing in the same hill as them.
From there the group decided to climb the hill and see if they could spot anything of note from above. The hill itself did extend about the nearby tree tops, yet the dim lighting thanks to the heavy grey clouds above did limit their sight.
Still they could make out a nearby river snaking along a few hundred meters from the southern side of the hill. Their entrance being on the northern side. The river was actually on the larger side which did worry the group slightly, but after observing it for a bit they spotted no movement so just had to hope that no beasts emerged from their depths.
To the east the forest seemed to grow a lot denser, and they imagined that would provide plenty of spots for beasts to build dens or nests within. The other two sides had no particularly interesting features that stood out, they had traveled from the west so they weren't all too bothered checking that direction. Instead they decided to explore the north first.
Making their way back down the hill the girls moved back under the shade of the giant trees. Activated their stealth skills and moved swiftly into the shadows.
A few things of note had been discovered a few hours later when they returned to the hill. First was that a beast lord was most definitely present in that direction. Thankfully it seemed like its domain was some distance away, so the group was hopefull that it would not venture in their direction. Second was quite surprising considering the presence of the powerful beast.
It was the fact that their were dozens of low leveled beats wandering in that area, some would even brazenly wander into the domain of the beats lord. This confused the group at first, at least until Violet seemed to realise something and quickly shared her idea with the group.
"The beasts are probabally quite safe living on the edge of the beast lords domain. The lord wouldn't care about a bunch of low leveled beast living near it, they pose no threat to it. At the same time killing them is simply not worth it as it would gain no noticeable experience. So it probably allows them to reside there and will most likely only ever kill any of them if it gets hungry."
And it made sense, a powerful beast would truly not be in any danger of allowing such weak beast to live besides it. If anything it would only benefit the lord. They could act as either an early warning system if anything powerful would venture into its domain, or at worst they could be a tasty snak if it ever got hungry.
This was also the first time since entering this region that the group had seen beasts clearly below level 40. It would seem like these weaker beast relied on living on the outskirts of the powerful domains. Well assuming that the owner of that domain allowed them to live there.
Still with the north mostly scouted out and not finding anything that they particularly wanted to fight there, the group returned to the hill and looked towards the east and the patch of dense forest that stood there.
Violet knew that their would be a lot of beast la that called that area home, the prospect of challenging them getting her excited. She just hoped that any beast they did run into within the tightly packed trees did not turn out to be too strong. Or worse yet… too weak.
