Chapter 137: The Eye of Darkness

The peaceful night was quickly interrupted by loud commotion coming from the western edge of the forest, where the hidden tomb of the Pirate King Heaven was concealed. Shouts from the Maritime Association members echoed, mingling with the clash of weapons, agonized cries, and thunderous roars. Chang Long jolted awake and stood up so quickly that Anya, who had been lounging on her stomach, rolled off onto the ground.

'What's happening, Kitsune?'

Chang Long sent a mental message to Kitsune, who was currently following Siegfried temporarily to maintain the illusion on the young man's clothes.

'It seems Captain Columbus's men are being attacked by a beast. We're heading there now, but I still don't know what it is!'

Kitsune responded.

'From the sound of it, it's huge. Be careful, Kitsune.'

Chang Long ordered with a serious tone.

'Understood, Master.'

Kitsune replied, sounding quite pleased to have a master who always showed concern.

'Davy-chan, Hisa-chan,'

Chang Long called out to the two invisible spirits telepathically.

'Yes, missy?'

Davy-chan responded, floating over to Chang Long alongside Hisa-chan.

'Keep an eye out for danger. I have a feeling it might reach here.'

Chang Long instructed.

'No problem / Consider it done.'

Both Davy-chan and Hisa-chan responded simultaneously. They floated away to the limit of their 50-meter range around Chang Long, watching the dark forest carefully. Chang Long resumed her seat but remained more vigilant than before.

"Sorry, Anya, I was startled."

Chang Long apologized to the fairy, who was now sitting cross-legged on her right shoulder.

"Your apology's rather late. It's okay, but that noise, if I remember correctly, is from the Kobold King."

Anya replied, pouting.

"The Kobold King. That means it's small."

Chang Long rubbed her chin thoughtfully.

"No, it's as big as Lycanth that the half-elf guy has, and it's covered in muscles."

Anya explained, causing Chang Long to widen her eyes, looking in the direction of the growing noise. Kimhant, Peach Blossom, and Valentine hurried out of their tents, searching for the source of the roaring and anguished cries. They gripped their weapons tightly, ready to defend themselves at any moment.

The sound of the battle continued unabated. This time, it seemed the agonized cries belonged to the Kobold King. The young men in Chang Long's group had joined the fight to help the Maritime Association members who were exploring the island at night. Soon, the noise of the battle ceased, replaced by cheers as players began to emerge from the forest. Although they looked worse for wear, most were safe.

"Did you find anything new, Captain?"

Chang Long asked as Captain Columbus approached the campsite near the forest edge.

"Not much. The nocturnal creatures here are just larger and more ferocious kobolds than their daytime counterparts."

Captain Columbus replied. He had a long scratch on his arm, a souvenir from the fight with the Kobold King.

"So, we're heading back tomorrow?"

Chang Long asked again.

"Yeah, I was hired by you after all. Besides, there's nothing more interesting on this island than the fairies in the flower field."

Captain Columbus glanced at the flower field in front of them. He felt a pang of regret that none of the fairies had been charmed enough to follow him like they did with Chang Long. He figured that after reporting about the fairies to the guild, they would likely send someone to undertake a mission to read the magical map in Tartarus City.

"Chang Long,"

Siegfried approached Chang Long with a smile, followed closely by Kitsune and Lycanth.

"Hey."

Chang Long turned to look at him with interest. Captain Columbus stepped back discreetly, wanting to give the two some privacy. It had been hard for him to believe at first that Chang Long was a woman.

"I got this from the Kobold King."

Siegfried extended his right hand, slowly revealing a black orb the size of a ten-baht coin in his palm.

"For me?"

Chang Long asked in surprise, reaching out to touch the black orb gently. Siegfried nodded with a gentle smile, and Chang Long picked it up to examine it closely.

"It's the Eye of Darkness. I thought you might need it, so I kept it for you."

Siegfried said with thoughtful care.

'Idiot.'

A mysterious voice sounded, causing Chang Long to look around in confusion. She did not recognize the voice.

"What's wrong, Chang Long?"

Siegfried asked, noticing her reaction, but she raised her hand to signal him to stay quiet.

'Acting without regard for your status...'

The voice continued. Chang Long tried to locate the source of the voice, while Siegfried, Kitsune, and Lycanth looked puzzled, as they neither heard nor saw anything.

'My heir, getting infatuated by the heir of Davy Jones like this, you'll lose before the battle even begins.'

Chang Long peered behind Siegfried and saw the faint figure of Pirate King Heaven slowly becoming clearer. She moved back in front of Siegfried, quickly rummaging through her bag, and then returned behind him.

Slap!

"Hey!"

.....

After recovering from the sudden attack, the two men attempted to climb back into the castle. Crown decided to use fire on the branches he had collected from the demonic tree. Initially, he did not know their use, but now he realized they were perfect for starting a campfire, as they were easy to ignite and hard to extinguish. He scattered the burning branches into the dark depths below.

The firelight revealed several strange-looking beasts. They resembled giant ants with jet-black bodies and large, scissor-like mandibles. They moved swiftly, scattering and retreating into the darker areas to escape the light and heat. Seeing the burning branches' effectiveness, Crown and Duncan split the branches from the demonic tree and held torches as they descended.

The castle was not very complex. In fact, it was too small to be called a castle and was more accurately described as a tower. Each floor had a balcony outside the windows and a spiral staircase descending continuously. After walking down the spiral staircase for a while, they encountered a room situated between the upper and lower floors. It was a sealed room with only one entrance.

The door was made of high-quality steel, thick and durable despite having weathered hundreds of years. When Crown touched the door, a wolf's head emerged from it, glaring at him and Duncan fiercely before speaking.

"What brings you here?"

"I've come seeking the Wolf of Azlam."

Crown responded without hesitation, as the answer was clear in front of him.

The wolf's head paused before vanishing, and the heavy door swung open. The room was a small circular chamber with wolf-head candle holders on the walls, their mouths open wide, holding lit candles. In the center of the room was a large statue of a wolf in mid-leap, holding two one-meter-long swords in its mouth.

The swords had a slight S-curve, with black and silver handles about twenty centimeters long, each adorned with a silver wolf head at the end. The blades were white, resembling thin but sharp wolf fangs, inscribed with ancient Hebrew characters on both sides.

Crown gazed at the swords in fascination. They were beautiful, compact, and easy to hold. They were perfect for his playstyle, which emphasized speed. He reached for the first sword, eager to admire it up close. But as soon as he drew the sword, hidden weapons shot at him and Duncan from all directions.

Clang, clang, clang, clang, clang!

Luckily, Duncan quickly pulled out a pan to deflect the attack just in time. Though they survived, Duncan was teary-eyed, having lost an expensive cooking tool in the process.

Crown admired the first sword for a moment before reaching for the second one, with Duncan on high alert. When the second sword was drawn from the wolf statue's mouth, hidden weapons launched at them again. This time, the room's lights went out, and they heard the sound of giant ants swarming into the chamber.

Both young men felt goosebumps. They quickly lit the branches from the demonic tree and threw them in a circle around themselves to keep the giant ants at bay. As the firelight illuminated the room, they saw something that made their eyes widen in shock—the secret room's door was slowly closing.

Both of them sprinted for the closing door, barely making it out in time. They used the burning branches from the demonic tree to clear a path, eventually escaping the tower. Not wanting to waste any more time in the desert, they used a teleportation scroll to return to Persia immediately.

.....

"Player Chang Long has obtained the spirit of Pirate King Heaven, level 100. Please name your spirit. If you do not name it, the system will use the spirit's original name."

The system's voice announced in Chang Long's head almost immediately as Heaven's spirit turned into light and entered the spirit tablet, uttering only a single 'Hey' in protest.

"Heaven,"

Chang Long said, startling Siegfried.

"You want to name your spirit Heaven, confirm?"

"Confirm."

As Chang Long spoke, the white jade spirit tablet displayed the name Heaven in black letters with gold trim. Siegfried watched Chang Long's actions intently, realizing what she had done. She had used the spirit tablet to capture the spirit of Pirate King Heaven that had been behind him.

"Once we're alone, I'll explain everything."

Chang Long said, noticing Siegfried's curiosity. He nodded in understanding, and everyone dispersed to go to bed.

The next morning, they left the volcanic island. Captain Columbus took Chang Long's group to the port of Tartarus City and then excused himself to attend an internal meeting of the Maritime Association. Chang Long's group proceeded to the castle, where the officer who had previously escorted them to receive their mission from the king looked at them in astonishment before asking,

"Have you already completed the first part of the mission?"

"No,"

Chang Long replied calmly.

"No? Then why are you back to bother the king? You'll only make him more distressed. If you can't complete the mission, it would be better if you disappeared altogether!"

The officer spoke emotionally. Chang Long smiled without a word, refraining from teasing him further despite the urge. She appreciated his loyalty and handed him an envelope addressed to the king and a gift box.

"Oh!"

The commotion echoed throughout the corridor leading to the throne room, causing soldiers, maidservants, and pages to look curiously at the soldier who usually guarded the castle gate. He was now running excitedly towards the throne room, shouting for the king with a beaming expression.

"Your Majesty, Your Majesty!"

"What is it? Why are you shouting throughout the castle like this!"

The king asked, rolling his eyes when he saw the soldier standing at the throne room entrance, panting.

"That group, that group, Your Majesty! They have returned, Your Majesty!"

The soldier reported excitedly.

"What! Why have they returned? Have they completed the mission I gave them?"

The king asked in astonishment. When he looked toward the door, he saw Chang Long's group walking in leisurely, showing no sign of urgency.

"Your Majesty,"

Chang Long greeted, bowing slightly, followed by her friends. The king seemed quite impatient and immediately inquired about the mission. Chang Long smiled and took out the letter and gift box given by Princess Rhea. The page quickly took both items and presented them to the king.

"Oh… Oh, this is indeed Rhea's handwriting!"

The king exclaimed emotionally, quickly opening the letter to read it. Then he opened the gift box and found a small glass bottle with a jug-like spout and lid, containing a glowing clear liquid.

"Thank you... Thank you all so much! I am truly happy, so very happy. Rhea... she is very happy too, isn't she?"

The king asked tearfully, his face beaming with joy in a way that his court had not seen since Princess Rhea's disappearance.

"Princess Rhea is indeed very happy, as you said, Your Majesty. She always had a bright smile on her face. Moreover, she has a very good relationship with her lover."

Chang Long replied lengthily and thoughtfully. The king was very pleased with her answer and immediately ordered the pages to bring out the rewards for Chang Long's group.

The reward from the king for completing the mission was a small glass bottle containing a softly glowing white liquid, similar to the gift received from Princess Rhea. When Chang Long picked it up to examine it, the system announced:

"Player Chang Long has completed the mission to find Princess Rhea. Receiving 15,000 experience points and 1,000 reputation points."

"Player Chang Long has received 1 bottle of Elixir (Rare Item)."
