Chapter 8: Death Wish.
"You?" Kai huffed, leaning on Ava after she offered her arm again, breathing heavily and swallowing in an attempt to catch his breath. "You followed me here from the market-"
"Come on," The student adjusted his glasses, walking towards them with his hand outstretched in a gesture of trust. "We can talk when we're far from here, the police are already on the way," He stared at Kai and Ava seriously, shaking his hand with urgency.
"I'm not gonna take your hand," Kai slapped his hand away and stood on his own, shrugging Ava's arm off himself as well, walking away from the two of them and then bursting into a full sprint along the pathway next to the highway before turning into the bushes.
"Ah, this guy is an asshole," The student shook his head, glancing back at the corpse one last time before staring at Ava. "Hi I'm-"
"No thanks," The girl shook her head and went into a sprint as well chasing behind Kai.
He ran for just as long as he had before, coming to a halt on the opposite side of the town in a park, flopping onto his back in the grass and undoing the rest of his buttons slowly.
"Should I return home?" He asked himself again. "Is it gonna be safe for my stepmom if I go back after what just happened?" Kai heaved breathlessly and tossed the shirt on the ground next to himself.
"... What exactly just happened?" He wondered. "They came from hell, they killed people, they possessed their bodies; if I hadn't seen it with my own two eyes I would have never believed..." He paused and sat upwards when he heard footsteps coming his way, picking up the shirt and folding it quickly to hide the bloodstains, only to sigh when he realised it was Ava that had followed him.
"Are you actually an idiot?" Kai quizzed the girl with his brows raised, seeing her smile as she panted and dropped next to him stretching her arms and legs out with a groan.
"I might be, but it just feels right to follow you, I know you won't abandon me-"
"I tried that already," He rubbed his forehead and sighed. "You're relentless."
"You saved my life again though, and you even came back for me when I was in danger." Ava argued his declaration with a smile. "Your actions contradict what you say, Kai Mora."
"Don't flatter yourself," Kai straightened his gaze when the student from before came into view as well, jogging towards them. "I just did that because I didn't want your blood on my hands," He narrowed his eyes, wondering why he even cared for someone he met only a week ago.
"Then what was all that about back there?" Ava chuckled. "She's off-limits!" She tried toughening her voice to sound like him while giggling. "That was seriously cool, you must have felt like a badass when you said it."
"I told you, whatever I did was only because I didn't want any more blood on my hands, we met there by accident," He tried explaining but it only made her laugh more thinking of how he protected her. "On that same note though, why didn't you run away when I told you to?" He asked, and saw her expression grow soft in his peripheral.
"Well," She calmly answered, showing creepy amounts of self control contrasting her hysterical self from just a few seconds ago. "I meant whatever I said back there, Kai," She started smiling again when she saw the winds brush his hair across his face and the light of the street lamp near them highlight his grey eyes. "I would rather die with you than live without you-"
"Don't," He shook his head and looked at the student as he came to a stop before them.
His hair was dark; nearly black, and his skin was blemished with freckles on almost every portion of him, he was slightly taller than Kai was, but he was skinny with evident signs of frequent injury starting from bandages on his arms to his forehead.
"Why did you follow us?" Ava asked when he slumped before them and took a bottle of water from his backpack drinking all of it, striding over to a nearby bin and puking up everything as soon as he was done. "What were you even doing in those bushes?" She asked him, and he chuckled and looked up at the two of them, and then slouched and puked in the bin again. "You could have gotten-"
"Is that what's really important right now?" The guy asked as aoon as he felt like he was not about to hurl his stomach up. "You were laughing just a moment ago, as if seeing a dead person is the most normal thing in the world and you are used to it!" He snapped at her and then pointed at Kai. "And you! Why was there a mouthless man and a headless man chasing after you, what the fuck?!"
He let out everything in one breath and then reached into his bag, pulling out another bottle of water and washing his mouth before drinking the rest and crushing it, shaking his fist at them. "I thought you two were some kind of new power couple, everyone inschool has been talking about the new guy and the infamous Ava Kim," He shook his head sweating and almost throwig up again.
How the hell do I explain what just happened back there to anyone though?" He asked and then dropped opposite of Ava staring at them. "I'm Andrew by the way; Andrew Spitt!" He gracelessly introduced himself, going into his bag once again and taking out a snack and opening it.
"Want some?"
"You try to sound afraid or make it seem like you care about what just happened, but the fact is you are the one who involved yourself the most here, I saw you in the marketplace by the store, you followed me, so you saw all those people get killed, yet you're still following me," Kai stared at him partially wary.
"Which of us is the real crazy one here, Andrew?" Kai asked after Ava refused the snack. "You even have the stomach to eat after what you just saw." He pointed out again.
"I eat when I'm stressed!" Andrew shook his head defensively and turned the bag to his mouth emptying everything and taking one more from his backpack. "I got curious, you beat up a bunch of bullies on your first day and take their money, but you used it all in the pharmacy on your way home-"
Andrew swallowed when Kai's shadow loomed over him, he didn't even see the guy move, he was just suddenly there, Ava seemed to have the same impression as she looked at the spot he was sitting at a moment ago and then at Kai again with her mouth agape.
It was just like on the bridge; speed that defied sense.
"Have you been following me home every day?" Kai slowly folded his fist in Andrew's shirt and began pulling him off the ground with one hand stuck in his pocket.
"Do you have a death wish?"
