Chapter 16: 16. Mercy
After seeing the fawn, no one wanted to kill the deer.
"You did the right thing," Henry would have done the same. "We need to find another kill." Henry started walking in another direction.
After walking for a while, they saw a male deer. "There he is. Axel, you can do this." Henry aimed his rifle at the deer. If Axel missed, he would shoot.
Axel closed one eye. After aiming, he put his finger on the trigger. Axel pulled the trigger.
A shot rang out through the forest.
Axel had successfully shot the deer. "Well done, Axel. That was a perfect shot." Henry began to run quickly.
The deer died quickly, shot through the heart. "That was a good shot, Axel." Henry didn't expect Axel to make such a good shot. He thought Axel was an amateur.
"We should carry this." Henry looked at the body on the floor.
As Axel reached out to carry it, Maxwell also helped. As they lifted the body, Henry looked at them in amazement. "Did you know these kids were this strong, John?"
"Not everyone is as weak as you, Henry."
Since Axel didn't know how many pounds a deer weighed, he figured two people could lift it. They started carrying the body.
After a while they reached the pickup. After dropping off the supplies, they got into the pickup.
"Let's go to your house, Henry. There's no one at our house who can cook a nice meal." John could actually cook a nice meal, but since he would be the only one eating, it would be pointless to bring a whole male deer.
"Sure, buddy." Henry started to drive back to his house. It was getting dark because it was evening. Henry stopped in front of his house.
When the car stopped, they all got out. "We should have a nice barbecue. Come on, help me carry this over there." Henry pointed to a spot in the yard.
When Betty got to the yard, she wanted to help Henry, but Henry said they could handle it and didn't let her help.
After about an hour, the work was done. After Henry cut the meat into pieces, he took his share and gave the rest to John.
Henry brought in some meat from the house. He wanted to have a barbecue, but he took the meat to be used in the barbecue out of the refrigerator because the freshly cut animal meat needed to rest.
"Today I'm going to teach you how to make a barbecue." Henry took the necessary items from the garage and brought them to the backyard. Axel and the others were discussing the Volturi.
Betty came out of the house and called to Henry. "Henry, we have guests. Prepare 6 more plates."
"Okay." Henry had brought more meat out of the house. As John helped him, 7 more people arrived.
Among the guests, an old man walked up to Henry and John. "Hey, how are you?" The old man greeted them.
"It's been a long time since we last met, John. How are you?" The old man knew John.
"I'm fine. How are you, Albert?" John greeted Albert warmly.
Axel knew Henry, but he didn't know Albert. Axel hadn't met them because Albert had moved to town 2 years ago.
"I'm fine, buddy. We talked to Henry yesterday. It's good to see you after the holidays." Albert had been on vacation with his family for about 2 weeks. By the time they spoke, Albert's family had arrived. Albert's wife and 4 daughters had also arrived. Albert's wife and Betty were sisters.
Since Betty and Albert's family were close to where Axel, Felix and Maxwell were sitting, the conversation about the Volturi had ended.
Axel began to talk about work, not wanting to show that they had stopped because of her arrival. Half an hour later, when the meals were ready, Betty had set the dining table. Everyone entered the house and sat around the table.
Axel sat next to John. Felix sat next to him. Maxwell sat across from him. Olivia had looked at the chair Maxwell was sitting in, but she looked away after Maxwell sat down.
Vampires are prepared for situations like this. They don't eat the meat on the plate. Because they are very fast, no one can catch their hand movements. They quickly move the food to another place while bringing it to their mouths. This is usually John's plate. As a shapeshifter, John can eat a meal for 4 people.
Everyone began to eat, and the young vampires pretended to eat as well. During the meal, Olivia secretly looked at Axel with her eyes.
After a while, everyone had finished eating. When the Blackwood family wanted to leave, Betty insisted that they stay a little longer. John, thinking that staying a little longer wouldn't be a problem, agreed.
"Axel, we haven't seen you for a while. What have you been up to?" Betty looked at Axel with a curious expression on her face.
"We've been traveling with the caravan for a long time." Axel added a little lie because he couldn't tell the truth. "We have explored many places, met new people and had many adventures. Lately we felt the need to rest a bit, so here we are."
Betty smiled. "What a wonderful adventure! What was it like traveling in an RV?"
Axel answered Betty's question sincerely, "Yes, traveling in an RV was truly a fascinating experience. Especially waking up to a different landscape every morning made it feel like a new adventure every day."
Curiosity sparkled in Betty's eyes, "Traveling for such a long time must have been quite challenging. What do you think was the hardest part?"
Axel thought for a moment and then replied with a sincere smile, "Yes, of course there have been some challenges. Perhaps the hardest part was the constant process of adapting to being in a new place every day. But those challenges were actually what made the experience more valuable."
It was clear from Olivia's face that she was curious. "That must have been an incredible experience. What do you think was your most memorable moment?"
Memories filled Axel's eyes, "It would be difficult to choose our most memorable moment, but perhaps sitting by the fire under the stars on a desert night in New Mexico was a moment I will never forget. It was truly enchanting under the endless silence and thousands of stars in the sky."
As Axel spoke, Olivia listened intently and her curiosity seemed to grow. "It must have been an amazing experience. The fact that you still remember that moment is very special," she said with a twinkle of admiration in her eyes.
"Yes, it's impossible to forget that moment. Traveling with a caravan not only allows you to explore different places, but also gives you the opportunity to discover yourself and the world around you. Moments like this remind us of the true value of life."
Olivia pondered Axel's words and then smiled, "I felt like I was living that moment as you described it. Your passion for travel and your experiences are truly inspiring. Perhaps one day I'll have a similar adventure," she imagined.
Axel responded sincerely to Olivia's words, "I highly recommend it. Everyone should have an adventure like this at least once in their life.
