Chapter 71: Slaying the Ghost Spider
Eight legs, two broken, only six remaining intact.
Originally, with seven legs, the Ghost Spider was already limping as it walked, not to mention now another leg is broken, leaving it with only six legs to use, completely disrupting its balance.
Luckily, although the Ghost Spider can barely walk, it can still leap!
Enduring the intense pain of its mandibles, the Ghost Spider jumped up from its spot, swiftly pouncing towards Yan Luo.
"Come at me!"
Yan Luo had long anticipated that the Ghost Spider would attack him, his eyes wide open, legs bursting with power, planting his feet into the ground to draw strength, channeling it through his waist and spine to his arms.
With great effort, he swung the heat axe from bottom to top, striking the Ghost Spider's jaw, as if it had deliberately offered its jaw for Yan Luo to hit.
The Ghost Spider's body was lifted into the air, crashing into the trunk of a big tree nearby.
Seizing the opportunity, Yan Luo charged forward, shattering the atmosphere as he swung his arm around, aiming the axe at the Ghost Spider.
The tremendous force directly broke the tree behind the Ghost Spider, and its body slid off the trunk, tumbling away.
Although it was a semi-ethereal demon, the Ghost Spider usually manifested its physical side, only displaying its ethereal traits when struck.
But against the heat axe, even its ethereal form was ineffective!
The Ghost Spider's body spun several times in the air, barely managing to control itself, shooting out a web from its spinneret to suspend itself in mid-air.
It never expected that the moment it stopped, a shock grenade would come chasing after it.
It didn't collide with the deflection shield, but exploded outside it.
The deflection shield only blocked the sound waves from the shock grenade, failing to prevent the flash.
The blinding light pierced the Ghost Spider's eyes, rendering it temporarily blind.
The familiar world plunged into darkness, and the Ghost Spider panicked, frantically moving its six legs nervously across the ground.
The ground tremors rushed from the front, the Ghost Spider turned to face the vibrations, opening its hideous mouthparts and spitting out foul saliva.
But Yan Luo neither dodged nor avoided, charging forward.
When its vision returned, Yan Luo was already in front of it. Without the slightest hesitation, the Ghost Spider opened its mouth to bite.
Demons didn't have weapons; their bodies were their best weapon.
The Ghost Spider's attacks had few variations, either stabbing with its legs, shooting webs, or biting with its mandibles.
Most City-breaking Level demons had massive body weight, but the Ghost Spider did not. It had to rely on webs for movement, and too much weight would make it unable to stand on them.
Compared to other City-breaking Level demons, the Ghost Spider's strength wasn't outstanding.
However, even just slightly stronger than the Shadow Wolf, this Ghost Spider was still a City-breaking Level demon, and in terms of strength, it surpassed Yan Luo.
If hit by the Ghost Spider, Yan Luo would be overpowered for sure.
At this moment, Yan Luo took a deep breath, holding the heat axe horizontally.
Bang!
The Ghost Spider's mandibles descended, and the heat axe was just in front of it.
The mandibles instantly got scorched by the blazing axe blade, even more terrifying than white phosphorous, as the latter only ignited its mouth, but the sharp blade could cut through its mandibles.
Yan Luo's entire body burst with strength, sustaining his body with his legs, every joint groaning under the strain as he was pushed back by the Ghost Spider, carving two grooves in the ground with his feet.
The intense heat from the heat axe frequently touched his eyes, causing him great discomfort.
Yet, even so, Yan Luo held his ground.
For failing to do so would have only one outcome—
Death!
Driven by his will to survive, Yan Luo locked all his joints, preventing any deformation.
Any deformation would mean his body would collapse at the slightest touch.
He was gambling now!
Testing his endurance against the Ghost Spider's, to see who would give in first.
The Ghost Spider pressed against Yan Luo's body, charging forward; the burning axe blade was wedged in its mouthparts, the heat pouring into its body throughout.
Its cellular tissues were being desiccated, the surrounding body of the mandibles carbonized, the destructive heat even reaching its nerves.
Gradually, the power in its legs waned, and after a dozen seconds, it could no longer endure, screeching as it leapt back.
Yan Luo, who was constantly monitoring the Ghost Spider's movements, shouted and hammered his fist on the back of the axe, causing the connection between the blade and the axe body to snap.
The Ghost Spider jumped back, but the hot axe blade remained embedded in its mouth, carried away with it.
Even away from Yan Luo, its mouth was still being burned by the heat, driving the Ghost Spider into madness, causing it to smash into the nearby trees.
Bang bang bang!
The Ghost Spider collided three times, breaking the trees, but the axe blade wedged in its mouth remained intact.
On the other side, Yan Luo mounted a new axe blade, rubbed his bloodshot eyes, then stomped a foot, drawing immense power from the ground, feeding back to himself.
His figure flashed instantly, disappearing from the spot.
Now the distance between Yan Luo and the Ghost Spider was just thirty-two meters; crossing this gap wouldn't take him even a second.
Yan Luo dashed to the Ghost Spider's side; he leapt fiercely, not swinging the axe directly but instead jumped onto a nearby tree, bending his knees to propel himself.
The tree broke with a tooth-aching sound, Yan Luo plummeted like a cannonball onto the Ghost Spider's back.
A hundred-pound axe completed a full arc, striking down with determination.
The connection between the cephalothorax and abdomen was slashed open, splitting the body in half, prompting a painful scream from the Ghost Spider, its remaining six legs unable to bear such force, splaying outwards, causing its body to hit the ground.
The semi-ethereal traits offered no advantage against the heat axe, and even brought significant negative effects to the Ghost Spider.
Yan Luo didn't pull the heat axe out of the Ghost Spider, instead releasing it, clasping his hands and smashing down on the axe's back.
The newly installed axe blade separated from the axe body, but pushed further down, completely splitting the Ghost Spider's body in two.
Having lost its heavy abdomen, the six legs seemed liberated, instantly propping up the Ghost Spider's cephalothorax, turning in fury towards Yan Luo.
Yan Luo lifted the heat axe, leaping swiftly away.
But the Ghost Spider relentlessly pursued, its six legs repeatedly pounding the ground in a furious chase after Yan Luo.
Yan Luo had no intention of a direct confrontation, turning around to run.
The Ghost Spider's running speed surpassed Yan Luo's, quickly catching up, but at this moment, Yan Luo slid backward, slipping right under the Ghost Spider, dodging its pounce.
At this point, the Ghost Spider was not far from death, now only intent on killing Yan Luo before it died.
Missing its attack, the Ghost Spider persevered, turning to chase.
As it turned, it saw Yan Luo lifting the axe handle, smashing down toward its mandibles.
One axe blade remained embedded in the Ghost Spider's mouth, though the temperature had dropped slightly, it was still emitting heat.
Yan Luo didn't install a new axe blade; he used the heat axe as a hammer, forcefully striking the embedded axe blade, driving this 'nail' deeper.
After embedding the axe blade deeper, Yan Luo turned and ran, without intending to check the outcome of his strike.
Because he knew well, this hit would inevitably cause significant damage to the Ghost Spider!
Sure enough, it did harm the Ghost Spider greatly.
The Ghost Spider let out another painful screech, its speed in pursuing Yan Luo noticeably reduced.
Yan Luo reached its severed abdomen before the Ghost Spider, hitting the heat axe against an embedded axe blade in the soil, a click rang out as the axe blade fitted securely to the axe body.
The temperature hadn't dissipated from the axe blade; once connected to the axe body it quickly heated up, Yan Luo immediately twisted and swept across, severing another one of the Ghost Spider's legs.
With only five legs left, the Ghost Spider could no longer maintain balance, stumbling past Yan Luo, rolling helplessly on the ground.
Rolling a few times before stopping, the Ghost Spider was now belly up, its five legs waving, trying to flip itself over, but how could Yan Luo let it have this chance?
With a fierce stomp, Yan Luo shot into the air, pulling his body into a crescent shape, swinging the heavy axe towards the Ghost Spider.
"Die!!!"
