Abyss Sequence

Chapter 69: The Embezzler

It's not easy to pull out Bai Sheng's superiors; Abyssal Believers usually hide very well.

However, besides Wu Zechuan and his group, the retired Hunters of Lingquan City are also making their move.

Previously, they schemed against She Wuyou, intending to use the power of law to temporarily weaken She Wuyou, and then use other groups and companies in Lingquan City to divide the market shares under She Wuyou's name. As long as the Abyssal Believers sensed She Wuyou was on the verge of collapse, they would instantly seize the chance to beat him like a dog in water.

But they hadn't expected that the elaborate plans they spent so much effort on would be effortlessly dissolved by She Wuyou.

Their efforts over the years almost came to nothing!

If it weren't for Yan Luo stepping in at the right moment, smashing She Wuyou's head with a mighty slap, this guy would have indeed gotten away scot-free.

After the affair with She Wuyou, the retired Hunters harbored a grievance, thinking that if it weren't for their mistakes, Yan Luo, an exceptionally promising young man, wouldn't have ended up being wanted.

As long as they could re-convict She Wuyou, most of the charges against Yan Luo would be cleared, and they could find ways to deal with the remaining parts.

Generally speaking, a Hunter who makes it to retirement usually has a good amount of money at their disposal.

But that's all floating, unattached wealth, and it's definitely not enough to deal with Abyssal Believers.

Many retired Hunters gathered their resources to form a few companies. They've been doing this since a long time ago. Nowadays, one or two of those companies have already gone bankrupt, but there's one or two that have succeeded and grown strong.

With money at hand, things become much easier to handle.

The retired Hunters of Lingquan City buckled down on investigating Bai Sheng's superiors and soon found clues. On the fourth day after Yan Luo's second return from the Elf World to Blue Star, they successfully unearthed the true identity of those superiors.

Unexpectedly, that person was also a member of the She Family.

After uncovering Bai Sheng's superiors' true identity, the retired Hunters started to feel uneasy as more and more things were revealed.

That person wasn't a direct subordinate of She Wuyou nor did he seem to have been pulled into the Abyssal Believers' group by She Wuyou.

This middle-aged man named She Wuliang belongs to the same generation as She Wuyou, being eight years older. Before She Wuyou began working for the Abyssal Believers, She Wuliang had already been doing so.

It's just that She Wuliang's deeds were rather dirty.

—He was responsible for embezzling the bereavement funds of Death Hunters!

When they discovered She Wuliang's actions, the retired Hunters were extremely furious.

Having served as Hunters for so many years, who hasn't had a few teammates or friends die in the Abyss?

They've painstakingly worked to resolve the demons within the Abyss, periodically thwarting the world's monstrous invasions, and She Wuliang dared to embezzle Death Hunter bereavement funds?

The accumulation of new and old grudges nearly led the retired Hunters to mimic Yan Luo and directly confront She Wuliang.

Luckily, they are older now, able to tolerate and understand that She Wuliang wouldn't be able to do such things without someone's collaboration.

Now, instead of confronting She Wuliang, they need to use him as a clue to drag out more Abyssal Believers or the ones aiding the bereavement funds embezzlement!

Chen Shan hasn't returned from Lingquan City yet; he's stayed behind with the retired Hunters to assist them.

Mountain and River Warband doesn't only have Wu Zechuan and Chen Shan as Sequence Three Hunters; their team is extraordinarily strong, so no issue if Chen Shan stays in Lingquan City, acting as a communication link between the retired Hunters and Wu Zechuan.

Wu Zechuan was feeling a bit headache-stricken, involuntarily rubbing his forehead.

The matter keeps escalating. They initially aimed to clear Yan Luo's name, yet it unintentionally dug up more issues.

Those Abyssal Believers are truly formidable, not only killing countless Hunters but also embezzling bereavement funds... Hmm?

With these thoughts, Wu Zechuan suddenly hesitated.

Previously, Zheng Guoxian devised a plot, saying it was to sacrifice Hunters' life blood to the Abyss, seeking the Abyss's attention.

But seeing that She Wuliang's main work involved embezzling Death Hunter bereavement funds, Wu Zechuan reckoned that these two might have exploited a significant loophole in this matter.

Those past deceased Hunters accounted for two-fifths of the total Crimson No.2 Hunters at that time, a staggering number, and the amount of bereavement funds disbursed was substantial.

If that's the case, She Wuliang surely messed with this affair.

Now, as She Wuliang continues embezzling Death Hunter bereavement funds, there's no reason he wouldn't have engaged in such activities when Zheng Guoxian was in power.

So, where did they use that big sum of money?

Wu Zechuan considers this a promising lead for their investigation.

If the embezzlement of Death Hunter bereavement funds got reported, it would undoubtedly stir a massive uproar.

"Helena..."

Wu Zechuan immediately recalled Helena Sheffield, who shares a similar background with Yan Luo, having lost her Hunter father in that demonic tide nine years ago.

Helena certainly received bereavement funds, but the question was about the amount she received.

With this thought, Wu Zechuan smiled.

"This is getting interesting."

........

Yan Luo remains unaware of brewing developments outside; he is slaying demons in the Abyss.

Since the day he discovered trees bearing fruit, various trees in the Abyss began flowering and bearing fruit, leading to upheaval within mere days.

Harmless and ordinary demons consuming fruits dropped by plants receive moderate enhancements, eventually rising from their initial levels to higher ones.

Higher-level demons, however, abstain from eating fruit; they consume lower-level demons who've gotten stronger after eating the fruit.

With more powerful lower-level demons, they become more nutritious to higher-level demons, inducing changes in the growth rate of higher-level demons.

In just a few days, Yan Luo witnessed some demons advancing from ordinary level to dangerous level, while others rose from dangerous level to lethal level.

To Yan Luo, this is, in fact, a favorable turn.

He's also part of this food chain, and he plays the role of a top-tier predator.

However, Yan Luo is not entirely selfish; he holds a sense of identity towards his 'human' and 'Hunter' identity.

The Abyss's danger level will rocket upward due to this phenomenon, and materials initially hard to obtain will easier drop thanks to demons' enhanced strength.

The high prices of these materials will continue for a while in the beginning, swiftly dropping as large quantities flood the market, settling eventually at a relatively high price point.

This will heavily impact the market, provoking conflicts between Hunters and buyers.

Yet, the deadliest issue isn't these conflicts.

The rising numbers of lethal level demons will directly boost city-breaking level demons, subsequently raising Hunters' mortality rate.

The Crimson Abyss is only so vast, an increased number of city-breaking level demons elevates the Hunters' probability of encountering them.

Ordinary Hunters facing city-breaking level demons face only one outcome: death, just like Yan Luo previously, having to flee from such demons, any carelessness can lead to instant death.

Hence, Yan Luo firmly resolved to commence mass slaughter of lethal level demons.

Now Yan Luo can face off against city-breaking level demons; lethal level demons are as trivial as worthless chickens and dogs, and Shadow Wolves are dismissible pests.

Even when faced with multiple lethal level demons attacking, Yan Luo won't be at a disadvantage.

He's too familiar with Crimson Abyss's demons, even if a lethal level demon acquired traits from other demons, Yan Luo could still predict their movements.

The Dark Forest's lethal level demons are being efficiently eradicated by Yan Luo, yet no matter how many he slaughters, the lethal level demon count keeps increasing.

Without transportation, Yan Luo can't travel far and can only circle around specific areas; his involvement can't extend beyond that.

Luckily, with Yan Luo's day-and-night purge, at least lethal level demons around the entrance have been cleared.

The slaughtering of lethal level demons is also a form of training; Yan Luo senses clearly how swiftly he's growing stronger.

Compared to the battle against the giant armadillo, Yan Luo might have grown by another five percent.

If that's the case, is he ready to take on city-breaking level demons in the Crimson Abyss?
