Chapter 58
After that, we continued to advance while dealing with monsters that kept attacking one after another for several hours.
Even though we took a break for lunch along the way, we kept walking.
“The fog is getting worse…”
“Maybe the spirits are playing. Both of us are spirit users, after all. Especially Jin, you are contracted with a spirit king, and you have a lot of mana so spirits tend to like you more.”
I see… so it’s just a game for them…
Just thinking about it sent a chill down my spine, knowing that probaby tens of thousands of people have died in this fog…
However, Mea continued to walk confidently toward the denser part of the fog.
I have no idea which way to go… Is it because Mea is an elf after all?
I’ve heard that elves have a kind of protection from the forest in the middle of the game, and this forest is like an elf’s backyard, so maybe it feels like playing in a backyard.
I honestly don’t think such a big backyard is necessary, though.
“———Stop.”
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
As I followed Mea while thinking about such things, she suddenly came to a halt. Furthermore, Mea was glaring around at the surroundings with sharp eyes.
“…It seems like fellow kin are lying in ambush, drawing their bows. It might be because an exiled like me, who was banished from the village, has arrived with a human.”
Certainly, the elves in this world still seem to have a strong dislike for humans, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they attacked when I arrived. In that case, maybe I should try to handle it this time.
“Mea, let me handle this for a moment.”
“But… Hmm, understood. But if they attack, I’m allowed to strike back.”
“No, if you do that, it’ll only make things worse.”
“…There’s no need to nicely greet people who attack us.”
Mea pouted slightly as she said such cute things. The way she looked at me with a slightly suspicious gaze was also quite cute.
…My girlfriend is so cute…
With a warm smile, I gently patted Mea’s head. Her tensed expression disappeared in an instant and she happily closed her eyes with a satisfied expression.
“…It’s unfair to pet me like that…”
“But you don’t dislike it, do you?”
“…Yeah.”
“Then stay behind me. If anything happens, I’ll protect you.”
“Okay.”
Once I confirmed that Mea had moved behind me, I summoned Shade.
“Ah, Master! What’s going on today? There seem to be many friends around! …Huh? Why do we sense danger from them?”
“I had a little disagreement with some elves, but… thanks to Shade, it looks like it will be resolved soon.”
As Shade and I spoke, the previously quiet surroundings suddenly filled with the sound of multiple elves approaching us. They knelt down before us, and the elf at the forefront lowered her head to speak.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you for the first time, King of the Dark Spirits! I am Laura, the captain of the third defence squad of the Elven Kingdom!”
“Oh, yeah… Hey, Master, what should I do?”
Shade perched on my shoulder and asked, causing the elves to look shocked, I could almost hear a “kaboom” sound effect over their heads.
“W-What…!? A human has made a contract with a Spirit King…! And it’s a master-servant contract!? Human! What have you done to the Spirit King!?”
Suddenly, the elf named Laura became furious, and the other elves, along with her, drew their bows and began preparing spells. There were roughly around 20 of them.
“Well, it’s not like I did anything special…”
“The ability to form a contract with the Spirit King is something only elves, like Queen-sama and the extraordinary genius Mea, can achieve! There’s no way a human could do it by the proper method!”
…That’s quite a harsh way to put it. Even if they don’t like me, it’s really disrespectful to act this way during our first meeting.
However, I can’t raise my hand against them. After all, I have to greet Mea’s parents… Huh?
I suddenly stopped in my tracks. Then, I slowly turned my gaze toward Mea, who was hiding behind me. She twitched and quickly averted her eyes.
“Mea?”
“What is it?”
“Is it true that you’ve formed a contract with the Spirit King?”
“…Yes.”
As I continued to gaze at Mea, who had switched to polite language, she surprisingly nodded readily.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, surprised by the revelation that Mea had formed a contract with the Spirit King, something I hadn’t known, and the game developers hadn’t announced.
“…Because I can’t use it right now,” Mea replied.
“Let’s ask about it in the elf’s homeland. I’m sure you’ll be able to summon it again,” I reassured her.
“Yeah,” Mea agreed.
“Don’t ignore us!” Laura, the elf, standing nearby, turned bright red with anger. However, when she noticed Mea hiding behind me, she froze.
Then, she gestured for the other elves to lower their bows and threw her own bow aside. She rushed towards Mea at high speed.
“Mea, will you marry me?”
“What?” Mea’s eyes sparkled with confusion.
“Alright, I’ll kill you!” I couldn’t stand by and let Laura propose to my wife. I unleashed a surge of magical power and clenched my fist.
“What are you doing, proposing to someone else’s wife, you idiot!!!”
“Huh!?”
I delivered a powerful punch to Laura, the annoying elf, to stop her from causing any further trouble.
