Chapter 1: the night of the diwali
Once upon a time, there was a family living in a village consisting of five members: the parents and their three sons, including me and my two older brothers. All three of us knew about demons, and my older brother and I were demon fighters. However, my middle brother was not strong enough to defeat higher-level demons beyond the easy-level demons.
My older brother and I would practice demon slaying, and together we had killed many demons that were above the normal level. The villagers, including our parents, did not know anything about the demons.
One day, my older brother and I went out at night to fight a demon. He told me, "You will fight this demon alone today." I agreed and said, "Okay." When I fought the demon, it beat me badly. It felt like it wasn't fighting me seriously.
Afterward, the demon changed its mind and started attacking me even harder, as if it intended to kill me quickly. Just as it was about to deliver its strongest blow, my older brother arrived and saved me. Soon, he killed the demon.
I was not happy that my brother had saved me because I wanted to become stronger than him, and I wanted to defeat that demon alone. That's why I didn't feel good about it. Afterward, we started heading back home.
While we were on our way, my older brother started teasing me because I couldn't defeat a normal-ranked demon. And we went back home.
The rank of demons indicates how strong they are. The ranks are as follows:
Lower rank
Normal rank
Upper rank
All these demons are controlled by the Demon King, Keto, who is extremely powerful. Beneath him are the upper-ranked demons, with the strongest being Shangshu. Then come the normal-ranked demons and, at the bottom, the lower-ranked demons, which are the weakest.
When Keto creates new demons, he immediately takes control of them. However, if he is unable to control a newly created demon, it means that demon is stronger than Keto. Such a demon could potentially team up with others to kill Keto, although this has never happened so far.
Now, the main character of this story is not me (Suka), nor is the main villain Keto.
The story begins on the night of Diwali, a festival when we light lamps and celebrate. We all light lamps and perform prayers, enjoying the festivities. We also had another house, and we needed to go there to place the lamps. This place was surrounded by a wall, and behind it, there were fields.
When we went there, a demon appeared, one that my brother had killed the previous night. In reality, it wasn't the same demon, but it looked like him. This demon was of normal rank. I told my brother, "Today, I will defeat him," and he replied, "Okay."
I started fighting with the demon and led him towards the fields. At first, I played around with him and had fun, but when I decided to finish the fight, the demon started running towards the village. I went to my brother and said, "Come with me, I'm going after this demon."
The demon was going towards the village because he was looking for a human to eat and gain strength. As I was chasing him, he attacked my girlfriend. I managed to save her, but I took a lot of injuries in the process. My older brother was coming slowly because he thought it was just a weak demon. That was true until the demon transformed into Shangshu, an upper-ranked demon.
Now, I was going to fight Shangshu, who was many times stronger than me or my brother. I began the fight, and when I punched Shangshu with all my strength, he easily stopped my attack. Then, he pierced his hand through my stomach, and I was almost dying.
Seeing this, my older brother got extremely angry and attacked Shangshu with all his power. However, Shangshu vanished with me before my brother could hit him. My brother became so furious that he started crying.
My older brother was very angry at my girlfriend, Shushi, because he thought I died while trying to save her. The villagers, whose houses were near Shushi's house, witnessed the entire incident. It was the first time they had seen a demon.
Afterward, my brother went home and told our middle brother everything. He was deeply upset, and my older brother was scared to tell our parents about how I had died and was taken away by a demon.
After a long conversation with my parents, my mother was very angry at my older brother for not being able to protect me, but my father explained things to her, and after 5-6 hours, she calmed down.
The next day, they performed my funeral rites and built a small memorial in my memory. Now, Shushi and my two brothers came to the memorial at night. On the first night, my brothers became very angry when they saw Shushi, but my middle brother explained the situation to them, and they forgave her.
