...
Victor lay on the bed with his eyes closed and with a calm expression. If it wasn't for the fact that he was extremely pale, anyone would think that he was sleeping peacefully instead of being dead.
"I... I'm sorry" – I said.
At this time, the only thing you can do is support your loved one. It doesn't matter if you know the reason for his death, the fact is that he is dead and Bronwyn's pain is no joke and right now all I can do is stand by her side and try to understand her pain, even if it is impossible.
"It's okay... It was a long time ago" - Bronwyn said.
We were silent for a while while Bronwyn grabbed Victor's hand and stroked his beautiful face.
"In the photos of the grandfather I saw that Víctor was still alive and seemed like a nice boy. What happened to him?" – I asked.
I have to pretend I don't know. It is something obvious that does not need to be explained.
"He was killed by something... horrible. I'm sorry, Jacob, I'd like to tell you, but I don't think I'm the one. Miss Peregrine said she wanted to be the one to tell you about it once you were ready" – said Bronwyn.
Even though she wanted to tell him, she couldn't. On the first day, after Jacob left the mansion, Miss Peregrine warned all the peculiars not to tell Jacob about the wight and the hollows. According to her, he was not yet ready to hear the truth. He still had to get used to this new world and that when he was ready and had adapted correctly, she would tell him the truth herself. Of course, they all agreed, especially after seeing the serious expression that Miss Peregrine had on her face. It was an expression they had rarely seen her make.
I see. I guess it's like in the books and in the movie, Miss Peregrine does not tell Jacob the truth about the Wights and the Hollows until he insists. For my part, I do not intend to insist on it. Miss Peregrine will tell me when she thinks it is appropriate, besides, it doesn't hurt me if she doesn't tell me, after all, I already know what wights and hollows are and I don't need any explanation.
"Then, I'd better ask her another time" - I said.
"Yes... it will be the best" – Bronwyn nodded.
She really wanted to tell him, really! But she couldn't. Miss Peregrine had been very clear and serious about it, and Bronwyn owed her respect. After all, Miss Peregrine was the one who took them all in when they had nothing.
"Moving on to another topic. What was he like? In the photos I saw of my grandfather he looked quite animated" – I said.
It is not worth continuing with the subject of how he died. It's best to try to cheer Bronwyn up a bit by reminding her of the happy times she spent with her brother.
"Yes. If he were still alive you would have become great friends. He was like you in certain ways. Fun and adventurous, but also mature and serious when he had to be. He often scolded us when we did not obey Miss Peregrine, but he always did it out of love for us, he always loved all of us, his family" - Bronwyn said as she remembered her brother.
"As I understand it, he had the same peculiarity as you. Is it something strange that two brothers are born peculiar and with the same peculiarity?" – I asked.
"Pretty weird. There have been very few cases and Víctor and I were one of them, he was such a good brother. He was the one who saved me after that incident and If it wasn't for him, I would never have met Miss Peregrine" - said Bronwyn.
"Could I know about that incident? I want to know everything about you" – I said sincerely.
I'll also do the same for Fiona and the others in the future. After all, I want to know what happened to them. Actually, I already know what happened to Emma thanks to the books, but I have no idea what happened to the rest and, honestly, I want to know. I'm curious.
"It's okay, I'll tell you. Anyway, it's not a story that I hide" – Bronwyn agreed.
"I hear you" – I nodded.
"You'll see. To begin with, you should know that when I had two years, my father died, leaving my mother, Victor and me alone" - Bronwyn began.
*Note: if you read the book and you don't remember this part or you find that is different from the origininal story, don't worry, I'm aware of that.
Seeing that I was silent, waiting for her to continue with her story, she continued.
"But after years of being alone, my mother decided to remarry another man, my stepfather. That's where it all started. When I was a child (and even at the risk of sounding narcissistic), I was a very pretty girl and let's just say that my stepfather had tastes... very rare and he often harassed me. However, when he saw that I rejected his advances, he began to abuse me physically, luckily, he never raped me because my brother always prevented him, but when my mother didn't look, he beat my brother and me. He abused us for a couple of years, until, on the day of my fifteenth birthday, I awakened my peculiarity at the same time as my brother. Curiously, my stepfather had his birthday on the same day as me and we decided to have a joint party. As usual, that day my stepfather tried to attack us and I, who by then had barely discovered my power and fed up with all the abuse, punched him in the cheek, breaking his neck and killing him in an instant" - Bronwyn explained.
Very similar to what I read in the book, but with slight differences. One of them was that Victor was not mentioned at all, but in this story, Victor was the one who protected Bronwyn from being raped by her stepfather, a pedophile son of a bitch who I hope has been reincarnated as a disgusting worm.
"What happened next?" – I asked.
"Everyone present saw that and instantly branded me as a murderer and as a monster. Victor and I were afraid, but especially me, who was paralyzed with fear and I couldn't move. But just as I was about to be beaten to death, Victor saved me and fled with me. After that, we wandered together for months until Miss Peregrine found us and offered us to be part of this wonderful family. The rest, you already know" - Bronwyn said.
As she recalled her past, Bronwyn felt an inexplicable pain in her chest. She remembered that moment dozens of years ago when she was just a scared girl who killed a person by mistake, In how she was branded as a monster and almost beaten to death. The nerves she felt at that moment, the terror. All those feelings invaded her body suddenly making her tremble, but soon, her body relaxed as she felt Jacob's warm body hugging hers tightly.
"I'm very sorry for everything that happened and I can't do anything to fix it, but that's over and now you're here, with me, and as your boyfriend, I promise that I will never let something similar happen to you and I will kill anyone willing to try; I promise" – I said seriously.
Bronwyn got emotional and began to cry for a while, venting the pain that disturbed her for years. Did you think she only remembered that moment to tell Jacob? No. Despite dozens of years having passed and sure that all those people were already dead and probably buried, Bronwyn had nightmares from time to time and would wake up at night sweating, but now, in Jacob's embrace, those feelings that flooded her every time she remembered that terrible event seemed to subside. As if they had met their nemesis, their worst nightmare and tried to escape in a hurry.
Bronwyn felt calm in Jacob's embrace and they continued to hug until all their pain disappeared.
"Are you better now?" – I asked after a while.
I hugged Bronwyn because I saw how she began to tremble, to make her remember those events was a blunder on my part, but I needed to know, I needed her to tell me about herself. After all, I want to know everything about her and let her know that will never happen again.
"Yes, thanks a lot. Thanks to you, all those negative feelings have disappeared without a trace; maybe I'll even stop having those nightmares" Bronwyn nodded.
"I'm glad, but now I want you to listen very carefully to what I am going to say, but this time I will not tell them to you, but to Victor. I want him to know something" – I said decisively.
Bronwyn nodded and stared at me.
For my part, what I did was to stand in front of Victor's bed and bow as a sign of respect. Whether he's dead or not, he's my family and he needs to know something. He need to know one very important thing.
"Hello, Victor. I want you to know that Bronwyn has told me a lot about you, and even though I didn't get to know you, I feel like I already respect you more than I could ever explain. I want you to know that from today on I will take care of her. I'm not perfect, but I'll do my best to be someone you'd be proud of. I promise that, as long as I am by her side, she will never be alone and no one will ever hurt her while I am alive" – I said.
Those were my true feelings and something Victor has to know. I know he's dead, but I'm sure he'd love to hear those words and I hope that these words reach him wherever he is. I don't know what he has reincarnated in and I don't even know if he did it on this planet or even in this dimension, but I hope that these words will comfort his soul wherever he is.
[I'm sure your precious words have reached him. You can be sure of that]
