Chapter 38: A Fall into Darkness
The SUV spiraled out of control as Xavier's bullets hit the tires, sending it skidding toward the edge of the highway. Jack gripped the steering wheel tightly, desperately trying to regain control, but the car was moving too fast.
"Hold on, Maria!" he shouted, his voice filled with panic.
Maria screamed as the vehicle broke through the highway's metal barrier, plunging down the steep embankment. The car tumbled violently, flipping over and over before crashing to a halt at the bottom of the ravine.
The silence that followed was deafening. The once-roaring engine was now a mangled heap of metal, smoke rising into the night sky.

A Tragic Discovery
Maria groaned, her vision blurry as she tried to move. Pain shot through her body, but she was alive. She glanced to her side, panic setting in as she saw Jack.
"Jack..." she whispered, reaching out to him weakly.
Jack's head was slumped forward, blood dripping from a deep wound on his temple. His body was motionless, and Maria's heart sank as she realized the truth.
"Jack, no... please, no," she sobbed, shaking him gently. But there was no response.
Tears streamed down her face as the weight of the moment crushed her. The man who had risked everything to help her escape was gone, his life taken in an instant.

Xavier's Assumptions
Up on the highway, Xavier stood at the edge of the ravine, his arms crossed as he peered down at the wreckage.
"There's no way they survived that," he said, his voice cold and detached. He took a long drag from his cigar, exhaling smoke into the night air.
One of his men approached, holding a flashlight. "Should we go down and check, sir?"
Xavier shook his head. "It's a sheer drop, and the car is a mangled wreck. No one walks away from something like that. Let's move. I've wasted enough time on these two."
His men exchanged uncertain glances but followed his orders. They climbed back into their vehicles, leaving the scene behind.

A Flicker of Life
As the sound of Xavier's convoy faded into the distance, Maria forced herself to move. Every muscle in her body protested, but she couldn't let Jack's sacrifice be in vain.
She unbuckled her seatbelt with trembling hands, wincing as she pushed open the crumpled car door. The night air was cold, and the distant sound of rushing water filled her ears.
"Jack..." she whispered again, her voice breaking. "I'll make it out of here. For you."
Gathering all her strength, Maria began to crawl out of the wreckage, her body battered and bruised. Blood trickled down her forehead, but she refused to stop.
---
The Struggle for Survival
Maria stumbled through the darkness, the steep terrain making every step a challenge. Her heart ached with grief, but her will to survive pushed her forward. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she couldn't stay near the wreckage.
"Keep moving," she muttered to herself, her voice trembling. "Don't stop. Don't give up."
Hours seemed to pass as she climbed, her body growing weaker with each step. The forest around her was silent, the only sound her labored breathing.
---
A Glimmer of Hope
As dawn began to break, Maria spotted a faint light in the distance. It flickered through the trees, giving her a surge of hope. She pushed herself toward it, her legs shaking with exhaustion.
Reaching the edge of the forest, she saw a small cabin nestled among the trees. Smoke rose from its chimney, and she could hear the faint sound of a radio playing inside.
Maria collapsed on the porch, her strength finally giving out. She pounded weakly on the door, her voice barely a whisper. "Help... please, help..."

To Be Continued
As the door creaked open, Maria's vision blurred, and she fell into darkness. She had survived the fall, but her journey was far from over. Xavier believed she was dead, but the battle for her freedom was only beginning.
