Chapter 34: The Welcome Scout
Los Angeles basked in its usual glamorous sheen as Vincent reclined in the lavish sitting area of Xavier's mansion. The two old friends had shared stories, clinked glasses of the finest whiskey, and reveled in their mutual successes. But Vincent's mind wasn't fully present. His eyes kept darting to the tablet on the coffee table, where the blinking dot representing his SUV moved steadily closer to Vancouver.
"Vincent," Xavier said, refilling his glass. "You're distracted."
Vincent smirked, picking up the tablet. "Just making sure everything is in order. Maria and Jack have been on a little road trip, but their journey is about to conclude."
Xavier leaned forward with interest. "Ah, the infamous Maria. Still defying you, is she?"
"Not for long," Vincent replied coldly. "James will ensure they get the welcome they deserve."
Xavier chuckled. "I'd expect nothing less from you. You always were thorough."

James Gets His Orders
In Vancouver, James Wilson sat in his modest office at Vincent's club, reviewing security protocols, when his phone buzzed. Seeing Vincent's name on the screen, he immediately answered.
"Boss," James greeted.
"James," Vincent's voice came through, calm but commanding. "Maria and Jack are about fifteen minutes from entering Vancouver. I want you to give them a...proper welcome."
James's brow furrowed slightly. "What do you have in mind?"
"Nothing too dramatic," Vincent replied. "I need Jack to know his place and Maria to understand there's no escaping me. Take a small team, intercept them near the city limits, and bring them back safely. And James," Vincent added, his tone growing colder, "make it clear to Jack that his little detour will have consequences."
"Understood," James said, standing up.
"Good. Call me once you've secured them," Vincent finished before ending the call.
James set the phone down and summoned two of his best men.
---
The Interception Plan
James and his team climbed into two black SUVs, their vehicles blending seamlessly into the night. As they sped toward the highway, James briefed his men.
"They'll be in Vincent's SUV, so don't damage the car," he instructed. "We'll block them off, force them to stop, and escort them back to the club. No unnecessary force unless Jack resists."
One of the men smirked. "What about Maria?"
"Vincent wants her unharmed," James said firmly. "And that's exactly what we'll do."
The SUVs raced through the streets, headlights cutting through the darkness as they approached the outskirts of Vancouver.
---
Maria and Jack on the Highway
In Vincent's SUV, Maria sat silently, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Jack glanced at her, sensing her unease.
"We're almost there," he said, trying to sound reassuring.
Maria nodded but didn't speak. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. What would happen once they reached Vancouver? Would Vincent let her go, or was she walking back into another trap?
Suddenly, Jack's grip on the steering wheel tightened. He had spotted two sets of headlights rapidly approaching in the rearview mirror.
"Maria," he said cautiously, "we've got company."
Maria turned to look, her stomach sinking as the black SUVs drew closer.
"Vincent?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Most likely," Jack muttered.
---
The Interception
The two SUVs flanked Vincent's vehicle, their aggressive maneuvering forcing Jack to slow down. One of them overtook and swerved in front, bringing all three vehicles to a halt on the shoulder of the highway.
"Stay here," Jack instructed Maria, his voice steady despite the tension.
He stepped out of the car, meeting James as he exited his SUV.
"James," Jack greeted coolly. "What's this about?"
"Jack," James replied, his tone firm but calm. "Vincent sent me to make sure you and Maria get back safely. Let's not make this difficult."
"Safe?" Jack scoffed. "You call this safe? Blocking us off like criminals?"
James took a step closer, lowering his voice. "Don't push it, Jack. You've already stepped out of line by taking her to Dallas. Vincent knows everything."
Jack's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
---
Maria's Dilemma
Inside the SUV, Maria watched the exchange nervously. She could see the tension between Jack and James, and her heart raced. This wasn't how she had hoped their journey would end.
James turned toward the car and gestured for Maria to step out. Reluctantly, she opened the door and got out, her eyes darting between Jack and James.
"Miss Maria," James said, his tone softening slightly, "I'm sorry about this, but we need to take you back to the club. Vincent's orders."
Maria's expression hardened. "Does Vincent even care what I want?"
James hesitated but didn't answer.
---
The Return
With no other choice, Maria and Jack were escorted back into Vincent's SUV, this time with James behind the wheel. One of his men drove the lead SUV, while the other followed closely behind.
As they neared the city, Maria stared out the window, her thoughts consumed by a mix of anger, fear, and despair.
"Don't worry," Jack whispered to her. "We'll figure something out."
But Maria didn't respond. She knew Vincent's grip was tightening, and escaping him seemed more impossible than ever.
---
Vincent's Anticipation
Back in Los Angeles, Vincent leaned back in his chair, swirling a glass of whiskey.
"They've been intercepted," he informed Xavier, glancing at his tablet.
Xavier smirked. "And Maria?"
"She'll be back under my control soon enough," Vincent replied, his voice dripping with confidence.
Xavier raised his glass in a toast. "To control."
Vincent clinked his glass against Xavier's, a triumphant smile spreading across his face. The pieces were falling into place, just as he had planned.

To Be Continued...
As Maria and Jack faced the consequences of their actions, Vincent's power seemed insurmountable. But even under his control, Maria's spirit refused to break entirely. What would happen next in this dangerous game of manipulation and defiance? Only time would tell.
