Chapter 22: A Dangerous Ultimatum
Maria had been treading a fine line since reuniting with her parents. Every evening after wrapping up her work obligations, she would drive to their home in the quiet suburbs. These visits were her sanctuary—a chance to escape the glitz and grime of her life with Vincent.
She would sit with her mother, Sarah, sharing stories of her childhood, while her father, David, would quietly sip tea and offer the occasional wry comment. For Maria, these moments of normalcy were precious. But she knew she couldn't keep her double life hidden forever, especially from someone as controlling as Vincent.

Vincent's Growing Suspicion
At Vincent's nightclub, where the music pulsed and the crowd swayed in the dim lights, Vincent sat in his private office, his sharp eyes scanning reports from his network of informants. One name kept popping up: Maria.
"She's been disappearing every evening," one of his spies had reported. "We followed her. She's visiting a house in the suburbs. Belongs to an older couple—seems like her parents."
Vincent's jaw tightened, and he leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of whiskey. This new development was unsettling. Maria, his most prized asset, was becoming unpredictable.
"Call Maria," he barked at his assistant. "Tell her I need to see her. Now."

Maria's Peace Interrupted
Maria had just finished dinner with her parents, the warm glow of the evening still wrapping her like a blanket. She was helping her mother clear the table when her phone buzzed. The name "Vincent" flashed on the screen, and her heart sank.
"What is it, dear?" Sarah asked, noticing Maria's change in expression.
"It's Vincent," Maria said quietly. "I have to go."
Sarah frowned, placing a hand on Maria's arm. "Be careful, Maria. He doesn't sound like the kind of man who takes kindly to being defied."
Maria nodded, her chest tight with apprehension. "I'll be fine, Mom. Don't worry."

Confrontation at Vincent's Office
The drive to Vincent's office felt longer than usual, each mile weighing heavier on Maria's mind. When she finally arrived, she found Vincent waiting for her, his expression dark and foreboding.
"You wanted to see me?" Maria asked, trying to keep her tone casual.
Vincent gestured for her to sit down, but she remained standing.
"Maria," he began, his voice dangerously calm. "You've been keeping secrets from me."
Maria's stomach churned. "What are you talking about?"
Vincent's lips curved into a cold smile. "Don't play dumb. I know you've been visiting someone—an older couple, to be precise. Care to explain who they are?"
Maria's heart raced, but she forced herself to remain composed. "They're my parents, Vincent. I reconnected with them recently."
Vincent leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "And you didn't think to tell me? After everything I've done for you, you think you can sneak around behind my back?"
"It's not like that," Maria said, her voice trembling. "I just needed some time with them. They're my family."
Vincent slammed his fist on the desk, making Maria flinch. "Your family? Let me remind you, Maria—you belong to me now. You don't get to have a life outside of what I give you."
---
A Dire Warning
Maria squared her shoulders, summoning the courage to stand her ground. "Vincent, I'm grateful for everything you've done for me, but you don't own me. I have the right to see my parents."
Vincent rose from his chair, his towering presence intimidating. "You're playing a dangerous game, Maria. If I wanted, I could destroy everything you've built. Your parents wouldn't be safe either."
Maria's breath caught in her throat. "Leave them out of this," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"That depends on you," Vincent said, his tone icy. "Stay away from them, and we won't have a problem. But if I find out you've disobeyed me..." He let the threat hang in the air.

A Conflict of Loyalties
Maria drove home that night with tears streaming down her face. She knew Vincent's threats weren't empty. He had the power and the resources to make good on his warnings, and the thought of her parents being dragged into his web terrified her.
When she arrived at her parents' home the next evening, they could tell something was wrong.
"Maria, what happened?" Sarah asked, pulling her daughter into a hug.
"It's Vincent," Maria admitted, her voice breaking. "He found out about us. He's threatening to hurt you if I keep seeing you."
David's expression hardened. "That man has no right to control your life like this. You need to get away from him, Maria."
"I wish it were that simple," Maria said, wiping her eyes. "He's too powerful. If I just disappear, he'll come after all of us."
Sarah placed a comforting hand on Maria's shoulder. "We'll find a way to protect you, Maria. You're not alone anymore."

A Plan Begins to Form
As the days passed, Maria found herself torn between her loyalty to her parents and her fear of Vincent. But deep down, she knew she couldn't keep living like this. With her parents' support, she began to quietly explore ways to break free from Vincent's grip—ways that wouldn't put her family in danger.
It wouldn't be easy, but Maria was determined to reclaim her life, no matter the cost.
For the first time in years, she felt a flicker of hope.
