A MIX OF TWO WORLDS

Chapter 34: Through Shadow and Tar

Kira winced as the sticky tar clung to her hands, its acrid heat seeping through her gloves. She pulled harder on the rope tied around Yaren's waist, her arms trembling with effort.

"Stop squirming!" Jenric snapped, his teeth gritted as he braced against the pull. "You're making it worse."

"Maybe if I wasn't sinking into this death pit, I wouldn't be squirming!" Yaren shot back, his voice tight with panic. The tar had already reached his knees, and it wasn't just pulling him down, it was burning him.

"Focus, all of you!" Nyssa growled, her sharp gaze darting between the group and their surroundings. "We don't have time to argue."

Malric adjusted his grip on the rope, muscles straining as he planted his feet firmly against the uneven ground. "On three. Everyone pull together. One... two... three!"

The group heaved as one, their combined strength finally breaking Yaren free of the tar's grip. He tumbled forward, coughing and shaking, as Kira and Selina caught him by the arms.

"Thanks," Yaren muttered, his voice hoarse. "Thought I was done for."

"You're not getting off that easy," Tessa said with a half-smile, handing him a water flask to clean the black residue from his hands.

Nyssa crouched beside him, her expression unreadable. "Can you keep moving?"

Yaren nodded, though his hands shook as he gripped the flask. "I'll manage."

"We don't have a choice," Leoric added, glancing down the corridor where the tar pit had almost sealed itself, leaving no trace of its existence. "This place doesn't let you rest."

"It doesn't have to," Zarik said grimly, running a hand through his dark hair. "It just waits for you to slip up."

Nyssa stood, her presence commanding even in the oppressive tension. "Then we don't give it the chance. Keep close, and stay sharp. If we hesitate, we die."

The group nodded, falling into formation with practiced precision. They moved cautiously, their feline instincts guiding them as they navigated the ever shifting paths.

Each of them was acutely aware that the labyrinth wasn't just testing their physical abilities,it was trying to break them.

Kira kept her eyes on the markings etched into the walls, subtle signs they had noticed earlier. "Nyssa, the symbols," she said quietly. "I think they're showing us a pattern."

Nyssa paused, motioning for the group to stop. She studied the markings, jagged claw like scratches that seemed random at first glance. But Kira was right. There was a rhythm to them, a faint logic hidden in the chaos.

"Good eye," Nyssa said, her tone approving. "If these marks are a map, we'll use them. Keep track of every one we see."

They pressed on, their confidence bolstered by the discovery. But the labyrinth wasn't done with them yet.

A faint clicking noise echoed through the corridor, growing louder with each step. Kira's ears twitched, and she froze. "Do you hear that?"

The group halted, their senses on high alert. The clicking grew into a sharp, rhythmic clatter, like claws tapping against stone.

"It's getting closer," Caleb whispered, his hand tightening around the hilt of his blade.

From the shadows ahead, a swarm of creatures burst into view, small scuttling beasts with too many legs and glistening, armored bodies.

Their eyes glowed an unnatural green, and their mandibles clicked hungrily as they closed in.

"Scatter!" Nyssa ordered.

The group split, moving with feline agility to avoid the oncoming swarm. Kira found herself cornered against a jagged wall, the creatures closing in too fast.

One leaped at her, its mandibles snapping, but she twisted away just in time, her claws raking across its body. The creature screeched and fell, but more took its place.

"Over here!" Jenric shouted, tossing a small vial toward her. She caught it instinctively and hurled it at the swarm.

The vial shattered, releasing a thick cloud of smoke that disoriented the creatures and gave her a chance to escape.

"Nice throw!" Kira called as she regrouped with the others.

"Don't mention it," Jenric replied, though his cocky grin faltered as the swarm regrouped.

"They're not stopping," Malric said, his voice tense. "We need to move, fast."

Nyssa's eyes flicked to the walls, noting an alcove just ahead. "Through there!" she ordered.

The group sprinted toward the opening, narrowly avoiding the snapping mandibles of the swarm. Once inside, Nyssa and Malric worked together to shove a large stone slab over the entrance, sealing them in.

The creatures scratched and clicked outside, but the barrier held. For now.

The group collapsed in a heap, catching their breath. The air in the alcove was stifling, but it was better than facing the swarm again.

"Everyone okay?" Nyssa asked, her sharp gaze scanning the group.

"A little singed, but alive," Zarik said, inspecting a tear in his sleeve.

"We can't keep running like this," Leoric added, his tone grim. "That swarm won't be the last thing this place throws at us."

Nyssa nodded, her expression hardening. "Then we stop reacting. We start thinking ahead. This maze may be alive, but it's not invincible. We'll find its weaknesses."

Kira leaned against the wall, her mind racing. The labyrinth was relentless, but they had something it couldn't account for: their instincts, their bond, and their refusal to give up.

"We'll get through this," she said quietly, more to herself than anyone else.

Nyssa caught her eye and nodded. "We will. Together."

"Or we could all die" Zarik said.
