A DIVINE FOOL

Chapter 28: WHISPERS OF THE VOID

Chapter 28: Whispers of the Void

The air at the next level of the Spire was unlike anything Yuki and Aria had experienced so far. It felt dense, almost oppressive, carrying with it a strange hum that resonated in their ears. The room was vast and circular, its walls covered in intricate carvings that seemed to shift and change whenever Yuki looked away. The floor was a mosaic of glowing tiles, each one pulsating with an eerie rhythm.

"Okay," Yuki said, breaking the silence. "This place is officially the weirdest one yet."

Aria's gaze swept the room. "The energy here... it's different. More... alive. Be careful, Yuki. Something's watching us."

Yuki froze, his eyes darting around the chamber. "Watching us? Great. That's just what I needed—an audience."

Before Aria could respond, the glow of the tiles intensified, and a low, guttural voice echoed through the room.

"Bearer of the Divine Orb," the voice said, deep and resonant. "You have come far, but your journey ends here. This is the Chamber of Reflection, where your true self will be laid bare."

The tiles beneath their feet shifted, forming a glowing spiral that led to the center of the room. In the middle of the spiral stood a pedestal, atop which rested a strange, black crystal.

Aria narrowed her eyes. "That crystal... it's radiating Void energy."

Yuki groaned. "Why is it always Void energy? Can't we get a break from all the creepy, shadowy stuff?"

The voice ignored his complaint. "To proceed, you must face your greatest fears and prove your resolve. The crystal will reveal the truths you seek—and the truths you hide."

"Truths I hide?" Yuki asked, raising an eyebrow. "I'm pretty much an open book, you know. Foolish, lucky, and bad at running away from danger."

Aria shot him a look. "Yuki, focus. This could be another trial. Be on your guard."

As they cautiously approached the pedestal, the crystal began to glow, its light casting long, distorted shadows on the walls. The air grew colder, and Yuki felt a chill run down his spine.

"I don't like this," he muttered, glancing at Aria. "Do you feel that? It's like the room is... alive."

Aria nodded, her hand resting on her dagger. "The Spire is testing us. Stay close."

When they reached the pedestal, the crystal's glow intensified, and a wave of energy erupted from it, enveloping them both.

Yuki staggered back, his vision blurring. "What's happening?!"

Before Aria could respond, the room around them dissolved into darkness. Yuki found himself standing alone in an endless void, the orb still clutched tightly in his hand.

"Yuki," a voice whispered, soft and sinister. "Do you truly believe you can wield the power of the Divine Orb? Do you think your luck will carry you forever?"

Yuki spun around, searching for the source of the voice. "Who's there? Show yourself!"

The darkness shifted, and a figure stepped forward. It was Yuki—but not quite. This version of him was taller, stronger, and exuded an air of confidence that Yuki could only dream of.

"You're... me?" Yuki asked, his voice trembling.

The other Yuki smirked. "I'm what you could be, if you weren't such a fool. If you embraced the power of the orb instead of running from it."

"I'm not running from it!" Yuki protested. "I'm just... figuring it out as I go."

The other Yuki laughed, a sound that sent shivers down Yuki's spine. "You're weak, and you know it. Without your luck, you'd be nothing. Do you really think you can protect anyone with that mindset?"

Yuki clenched his fists, his grip on the orb tightening. "Maybe I'm not the strongest or the smartest, but I'm not giving up. I've come this far, and I'm not stopping now."

The other Yuki's smirk faded, replaced by a look of disdain. "We'll see how long that resolve lasts."

The figure lunged at him, and Yuki raised the orb instinctively. A barrier of light appeared, deflecting the attack.

"I'm not afraid of you!" Yuki shouted, his voice echoing in the void.

The figure sneered. "You should be."

Meanwhile, in another part of the void, Aria faced her own trial. She stood in a familiar forest, the scent of pine filling the air. Before her stood a younger version of herself, clutching a broken dagger and staring at her with tear-filled eyes.

"Why did you leave us?" the younger Aria asked, her voice trembling. "Why did you run away?"

Aria's heart ached at the sight. "I didn't have a choice," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I was trying to protect you."

"You abandoned us!" the younger Aria shouted, her eyes blazing with anger. "You left me alone!"

Tears streamed down Aria's face as she stepped forward. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

The younger Aria's expression softened, and she reached out to touch Aria's hand. "Then don't let it happen again. Protect the people you care about. Don't run away."

The forest dissolved, and Aria found herself back in the Chamber of Reflection. She turned to see Yuki, who was also returning from his trial, the orb glowing faintly in his hand.

"You okay?" Yuki asked, his voice uncharacteristically serious.

Aria nodded, wiping her tears. "Yeah. You?"

Yuki forced a grin. "I think I just won an argument with myself. Does that count as character growth?"

Aria chuckled, shaking her head. "Come on, Yuki. Let's finish this trial."

The crystal on the pedestal shattered, and a new staircase appeared, leading upward.

As they ascended, Yuki couldn't help but glance at the orb in his hand. For the first time, he felt a sense of clarity—a connection to its power that went beyond luck or chance.

"We're getting closer," he said, his voice filled with determination. "Let's see what the Spire throws at us next."
