Chapter 3 - Current State
"Thanks for the help," Simon said gratefully.
"Happy to," Harry replied. He and Simon watched the trainees in the Auror Academy continue to run laps around the large training space. The Auror Academy was technically broken up into several different locations. They had a wilderness training area for outdoor exercises and activities, located at FireFalls Preserve out in the wilderness. They also had one at the coast for aquatic training and one in the Scottish Highlands for rockier terrain. The main classrooms were located in the Ministry alongside the Corps offices and the large training space was also there, deep underground. It was very large and mutable, allowing the Aurors to set up urban combat and close quarters combat spaces and training.
Simon was a veteran Auror and had served the Corps for some time. During the fall of the Ministry and the Second War, he had joined a few other Aurors that had fled the initial purge and had fought back however they could. When Voldemort fell and the Death Eaters were in disarray, they came when Kingsley called and helped reestablish proper control over the Ministry. As a Senior Auror and fellow Captain, he helped run the day-to-day activities and duties of the Aurors while Gawain was watching over the DMLE as a whole while also being one of the main instructors for the Auror Academy, the incoming recruits and trainees.
Harry had come to help with the morning training and the pair of them put the new training class through the paces. After a brief lesson on spell detection, they moved to the physical part of the training. Harry started them on running laps, smiling fondly at a memory as he did.
"Running builds stamina," he said cheerily to the huffing and puffing recruits. "Stamina keeps you alive! You outrun your opponent, you outfight your opponent, and you're the one that goes home! You run all the time as it is. You run errands, you run home, you run out, you run! Since you do it so much, you might as well get good at it!"
"Yes Captain Potter Sir!" the recruits shouted, trying to keep up the steady pace.
"You look like you're enjoying this too much," Simon said with amusement.
"Well, it's a good memory," Harry said, smiling. "In school, my Quidditch captain would have us run a lot to build stamina just like this. It really did help, we usually outlasted the other teams. Of course we hated it at the time and groaned a lot which only made him cheerier about it."
"That's funny," Simon chuckled.
"I'm sure he's doing it to his current team," Harry said fondly. "Oliver Wood, Keeper for Puddlemere."
"Oh I like him, he's a good player," Simon said.
Harry blew the whistle and the recruits slowed down, grateful for the reprieve. Gratefulness became apprehension as Harry waved his wand and the empty space became an obstacle course. Nets climbed into the air and parts of the ground became muddy, thick clinging morasses that hindered movement. Beams appeared and hurdles grew from the ground.
"Now for a change of pace," Harry said, "running through an obstacle course! Like this!" He took off on a run and the others watched with astonishment as he went through the course at a good pace. He climbed over the nets up the wall and slid down the back of it. He walked over beams without falling and crawled through the mud without stopping. He finally swung over the end and went through a pool, cleaning the mud away. He climbed out the end to applause.
"Now all of you go through and to make sure it's not too easy, you'll be doing a bit of dodging. You get hit, you start over. Right, first five line up and....GO!" He blew his whistle again and the first five started their runs.
"We shooting stuff at them?" Simon asked.
"Nope." Harry kicked a case beside them and two Bludgers flew into the air. The magical iron balls buzzed with latent threat and they zoomed onto the obstacle course, knocking one of the recruits off a beam with a solid hit. "Hit, Eckles! Start over!"
Simon grinned, shaking his head when another recruit dove into the mud to avoid the ball. "That's almost cruel."
"I don't think so," Harry protested. "I made them slower and hit more softly than school Quidditch standard."
"Well that's fair then," Simon snorted.
"Sir, it's not fair," a recruit gasped after starting a third attempt. "The Bludgers are too fast! No one finished yet."
"Well what do you do when you can't dodge it?" Harry asked, smiling.
The trainees looked at each other. "Use magic?" one asked slowly.
"5 points to...what..
