Chapter 6: THE SEARCH FOR CLUES
Evan and Jaxon sat in the hospital room, their minds racing with possibilities. The revelation of the soul exchange had left Jaxon stunned, unable to believe the mysterious situation. He ran his hands through his hair, pacing back and forth.
"How did this happen? Is this a movie or something?" Jaxon muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
Evan sighed sadly, watching his brother struggle to accept the reality. "I know it's hard to believe, but it's the truth. We need to figure this out together."
Jaxon stopped pacing and stared at Evan. "This is insane. I can't wrap my head around it. One minute you're my brother, and now you're...Sara. How is this even possible?"
Evan looked down at his hands, feeling a pang of sadness. "I don't know. But we need to find a way to reverse it. I can't stay like this forever."
Jaxon took a deep breath and sat down next to Evan, his expression softening. "Okay, let's take a moment. Just...how are you feeling?"
Evan shrugged, trying to keep his composure. "It's overwhelming. I'm trying to navigate Sara's life, and it's not easy. I miss being myself."
Jaxon looked at Evan from head to toe, his eyes lingering. "Well, I have to say, you do look different. You're actually...really beautiful."
Evan blinked, taken aback. "What? Are you serious?"
Jaxon chuckled, a shy smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, bro. You're looking very sexy."
Evan frowned, feeling a mix of confusion and irritation. "Are you crazy? How could I be sexy?"
Jaxon put his hand on Evan's shoulder, his voice turning playful. "Don't forget, you're a girl now. Why don't you give me a chance?" He winked at Evan, trying to lighten the mood.
Evan's anger flared, and he punched Jaxon's leg. "Do you need a chance? Go for it."
Jaxon yelped in pain and pulled away, rubbing his leg. "Ouch! Okay, okay, your anger and strength definitely haven't changed."
Evan sighed, feeling disturbed. "I can't bear two assholes at the same time."
Jaxon, curious, asked, "Who's the other one?"
Evan replied with a forced smile, "My fiancé, Adison."
Jaxon burst into laughter, mocking Evan with the word "fiancé." "Fiancé, huh? So, you're engaged now? This just keeps getting better."
Evan rolled his eyes, feeling a mix of frustration and amusement. "Yeah, it's complicated."
Jaxon continued to laugh, unable to let it go. "I can just picture it now—Evan in a wedding dress, saying 'I do.' This is hilarious!"
Evan glared at Jaxon. "Very funny. Can we please move on?"
Jaxon wiped a tear from his eye, still chuckling. "Alright, alright. But you have to admit, it's kind of ironic. The tough, no-nonsense Evan engaged to Adison."
Evan couldn't help but crack a small smile. "Yeah, it's pretty ironic."
Jaxon leaned back, still grinning. "So, how's the fiancé? Is he treating you well? Should I give him a brotherly talk?"
Evan sighed, shaking his head. "Adison is...well, he's trying. But he has no idea what's really going on. It's complicated enough without adding your teasing."
Jaxon chuckled. "Alright, I'll ease up. But seriously, bro, you make one hell of a girl."
Evan smirked. "Thanks, I guess."
Jaxon then grew more serious. "So, tell me about Sara's family. What are they like?"
Evan hesitated, thinking back to his brief interactions with Sara's family. "Her parents are nice. They seem really caring and supportive. Her dad is kind of strict, but you can tell he really loves her. Her mom is warm and always fussing over her."
Jaxon nodded. "And Adison?"
Evan sighed. "Adison is...intense. He's really protective and sometimes overbearing. But he means well. He's just worried about Sara...well, me, right now."
Jaxon raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like a handful. What about her best friend?"
Evan smiled slightly. "Ashley. She's great. Really bubbly and always positive. She's been a huge help, especially with everything going on. I haven't been able to tell her the truth, though. She'd probably think I'm crazy."
Jaxon laughed. "I can see why you'd think that. It must be tough pretending to be someone else."
Evan nodded. "It is. I don't really know everything about Sara's life. I can only guess and try to fit in. It feels like walking on a tightrope every day."
Jaxon put a reassuring hand on Evan's shoulder. "We'll get through this. Today, we take the first step. Together."
Evan sighed and then suddenly looked at Jaxon with concern. "What about our parents? How are they handling all of this?"
Jaxon's expression grew somber. "They're not okay. They're very tense and worried about you...I mean, Evan. Mom is always by your side, refusing to leave. Dad tries to stay strong, but you can tell he's struggling."
Evan felt a pang of guilt. "I hate that they're going through this. I wish I could tell them everything will be alright."
Jaxon gave him a sad smile. "We'll get through this. We have to."
Suddenly, Jaxon seemed to remember something. "Wait a minute. I have a friend who believes in all this mysterious stuff. He's into the supernatural and knows a lot about things most people wouldn't believe. He might be able to help us."
Evan's eyes widened with hope. "Really? Who is he?"
Jaxon nodded. "His name is Alex. He's always been into the paranormal. If anyone can help us understand what's happening, it's him."
Evan took a deep breath, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "That sounds promising. Can you get in touch with him?"
Jaxon smiled. "Of course. I'll call him as soon as we get out of here."
Evan felt a renewed sense of hope. "Thanks, Jaxon. I really appreciate it."
Jaxon nodded. "We're in this together, bro. Don't worry."
Evan suddenly remembered something. "Wait, I'm supposed to be discharged today. The doctors said I can continue my treatment at home."
Jaxon looked confused. "So how are we going to meet up with Alex? We can't exactly tell the doctors and our parents what's really going on."
Evan thought for a moment, then said, "We can make up an excuse. Maybe say we're investigating something related to Sara's health or the accident. That should buy us some time."
Jaxon nodded, a plan forming in his mind. "Alright, let's do that. I'll make the call to Alex and set up a meeting."
At that moment, the door to the room opened, and Adison entered. He was about to call out to Sara but stopped when he saw Jaxon and Sara sitting close together. His expression shifted to one of surprise and suspicion.
"What's going on here?" Adison asked, his voice tinged with irritation.
Jaxon and Evan looked up, startled by Adison's sudden appearance. Jaxon quickly composed himself and asked, "Adison, what brings you here?"
Adison didn't reply immediately, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene. He didn't like seeing Jaxon and Sara so close, but neither Jaxon nor Evan noticed his discomfort. "I came to check on Sara. What are you two doing together?"
Jaxon, not thinking, started to say, "Bro and—"
Evan quickly interrupted, not letting Jaxon finish. "I saw Jaxon in the hall and called him in to talk about my brother's situation."
Adison's expression remained serious. "Oh, I see. How is Evan doing?" he asked, turning his attention to Jaxon.
Jaxon replied, keeping his tone neutral. "He's stable, but it's still a waiting game. The doctors are doing everything they can."
Adison nodded, then made an excuse to pull Evan closer to him. He put his hand around Evan's waist, a possessive gesture that made Evan feel uncomfortable. Evan tried to remove Adison's hand, but Adison held firm. Eventually, Evan managed to push Adison's hand away, feeling a mix of discomfort and frustration.
"Adison, can you give us a moment?" Evan asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
Adison looked at Evan, his eyes narrowing. "Why? What's so important that I can't be here?"
Jaxon intervened, sensing the tension. "It's nothing, Adison. We were just discussing some medical details. I'll fill you in later."
Adison reluctantly stepped back, his eyes still fixed on Evan. "Fine. Just don't keep her too long. She needs to rest."
Evan nodded, feeling a wave of relief as Adison moved away. "Thank you. I'll be quick."
Jaxon watched the interaction carefully, noting the possessiveness in Adison's behavior. He made a mental note to discuss it with Evan later.
Just then, a nurse entered the room and informed Jaxon that the doctor was looking for him. Jaxon smiled and said, "I'll see you both soon. I hope I get to see more of Sara too."
Adison's expression darkened slightly, clearly not pleased by Jaxon's words. "We'll see about that," Adison muttered under his breath.
