My (Monster?) Hero Life

Chapter 92: Duty Fulfilled

The heroes rushed at them at a single unit. Each one bombarded their location with their best spells. Grugda and the vampires rushed to build a hasty defence to intercept them. They layered walls of ice and rock one after the other. Dampening the effects of the mixed spells.

"Hurry up will you!" Sophia yelled at Feliks.

"Hmph! Do you even realise how hard it is to activate this thing alone?" Feliks threw back at her. Beads of sweat rolled down both his brows as the strain put an immense burden on his body.

Tyler cursed as he realised how close the spell was to completion. He began to carelessly waste his mana by throwing as many spells as he could at the walls to make them crumble. Phillip and Sarah joined the endeavour. Combining their mana into a more powerful attack. Sophia's wind magic mixed with Phillip's fire elevating its destructive capabilities to new heights.

The force from their combined spell was the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. The walls came crashing down, sending debris all over the area. As the heroes stormed their foes location, they realised that something was wrong when Feliks's face became visible, complete with a wolfish grin.

"Fuck! We've been had!" Tyler roared much to everyone's astonishment.

The spell that Feliks had been preparing was actually two separate ones. A spatial bubble formed in front of his chest while the gate also came to life at the same moment. The space that filled the area of the gate's archway was suddenly filled with swirling purple fog.

"Hurry now! I can't hold it for long!" Feliks yelled.

Kace's group did not have to be told twice. Most of the crew had already taken a leap of faith before Feliks had even had a chance to say to them. Sophia carried Kace towards the portal as the figure of Yul became discernible through the spatial bubble that Feliks had generated.

The heroes cursed and spewed all manner of profanities at the cyclops as they realised what was happening. Feliks let the bubble fly encompassing all of the heroes within the cave. They felt a sense of nausea as their bodies were displaced back to the beach, where they had landed on the Island.

Most of them doubled over, emptying the contents of their guts onto the sand. Yul howled with fury, lashing out at the spacial gate that had formed in front of him with his tentacles. They snaked through the air and used Feliks spell against him.

They swiftly invaded the cave and proceeded to pierce Feliks's body in several areas. Feliks spewed blood as they then coiled around his body mass. He spared a final glance at the princess that he had lived his life to protect. 'My queen. I have fulfilled my duty.'

Sophia shed a single tear for the cyclops who had been a constant companion throughout her long life. She took the final step into the gate dragging Kace with her. Every member of their group that had survived had safely made it into the gate. Satisfied with his last moments, Feliks closed his eye.

In his fury, Yul used the tentacles that had penetrated the cyclops body to tear him limb from limb. Tossing the various body parts to separate corners of the cave before retracting his tentacles before the spell caved in on itself.

All parties present on the beach watched on in a stupor as the spell collapsed. Cutting them off from the gate any means of pursuing their target. Erik violently swore to the heavens as he realised the opportunity that had unknowingly slipped between his fingers.

Now that Kace's group had escaped to the gods only knew where and they were gathered on the beach alongside Yul, they only had two choices remaining to them. They could retreat and try and minimise their losses, or they could attempt to settle matters with the giant.

Erik was no fool, though, he had a clear grasp of what way the winds of fate would blow if they chose to continue engaging Yul. 'I'll have to report this to the Guild when I return. They might even choose to get serious about subjugating this place just to get their hands on the gate.' He threw a contemplative look towards the colossal figure of Yul who was still throwing a tantrum.

"Fall back!" He commanded, even though he knew that raising his voice now carried with it the risk of drawing Yul's anger upon themselves, there were no other options. Too many of his men were still staring into space as though they could not believe what had happened.

The command snapped Yul back to his senses. His hate-filled eyes landed on all of the fresh meat that been delivered right to his feet. They would make excellent toys to help him vent his frustrations.

"Who told you that you could leave?" Yul sneered as his question hovered over the heroes like a death sentence.

Erik unleashed a bolt of lightning that was tinted in a purple colour towards the sky. This was the signal that he had agreed with his men who had stayed behind on the remaining two ships before they had even departed.

"Run for it!" He roared as Yul unleashed his tentacles of horror upon them.

It took less than a minute for him to slaughter a quarter of their numbers. The rest of the heroes began to fear that they would never make it to the safety of the ships. That was when they heard it, the thunderous booming of a naval cannon bombardment.

Erik's troops cheered as they sprinted at full speed for the sea. Explosions rocked the beach moments later as cannon shells rained down on the walls that Yul had created to protect himself from the artillery strike.

Phillip glanced over his shoulder back towards where the entrance to the cave was situated. Disappointment filled his expression, he had once again failed to kill this single monster. There was no telling when or if he would ever get another chance.
