What can you gain if you win a world championship? The first things that come to mind are honor and popularity. The LVS team, which confidently took the championship at last year’s Hiore World Championship, earned honor and popularity through grueling effort and exceptional skill. But does that mean they’re unconditionally happy?
Having skill means you stand more often in positions to be evaluated. Many people lavish praise on the brilliant plays of a skilled player, but at the same time, if they show something lacking, they also face strong criticism. It’s not easy to protect the glorious No. 1 spot earned through effort and skill.
Today’s interviewee is LVS’s jungler “Sensory,” player Yoo Chae. Having already turned twenty-five, “Sensory” has become a veteran entering his sixth year. Just how much effort is Sensory putting in to earn the label “the best team in the world,” and with what mindset does he approach matches as a pro gamer? Also, aside from the player “Sensory,” what ordinary worries does the person Yoo Chae have? We talked with him and heard a variety of stories.

■ The Glory of the Hold Cup, Regained
Q. First, please introduce yourself to readers of this interview.
Hello. I’m LVS’s jungler “Sensory,” Yoo Chae. It’s been a while—nice to greet you through an interview.
Q. You’ve become a veteran entering your sixth year. Even excluding the break, you’ve worked as a pro gamer for the long span of five years—has the sense of pressure eased a bit?
Of course I’m less tense than when I first went up on stage to play, but the fluttering in my chest is the same. Since I always do my best so I can show as much as I’ve prepared, I think that part is unavoidable.
Q. So in the end, nothing has changed much?
Yes. That’s right. (laughs)
Q. You took the championship at last year’s World Championship, and not long ago you won the Spring tournament. If you could share a word about how you feel?
We worked really hard to qualify for the Hold Cup. After qualifying, we worked with the goal of winning. So when we did win, the first thing that came to mind was “thank goodness.” I was happy too because we achieved the goal. The stage was different, but the Spring tournament was the same.
Q. It’s impressive that you say you didn’t discriminate between the world championship and domestic tournaments and worked equally hard. After “Sensory” returned from a one-year break, LVS immediately lifted the cup again—how do you see that?
Even if I hadn’t returned, LVS would have taken both last year’s Hold Cup and this year’s Spring championship. The team was that close to perfect even before I came back, and I put in a lot of practice to raise my skill to match the team.
Q. It must have been hard in many ways to start playing again after a year off. Was there anyone who helped you? How about Head Coach Yoo Kyungseok or fellow jungler “Tenet”?
It’s hard to pick just one person—everyone helped. The coach and “Tenet,” of course, helped a lot. In particular, they put a lot of effort into mental care so I’d feel even a little less pressure. I wanted to repay that help, so I worked even harder.
Q. From last year’s Hold Cup win to this year’s Spring season win, LVS has lifted the cup twice in a row—what’s the next goal?
Naturally, winning the Hold Cup. For that, we first have to put up a good record in Summer.

Q. Half a year has already passed since you turned twenty-five. Your peers are at the age to be in university—don’t you envy that ordinary daily life?
I do. Walking the campus with close friends, doing assignments, going out to have fun… last year I especially envied those small everyday things university students enjoy. Honestly, I still do. (laughs)
Q. When age comes up, we can’t skip the military. I hear fans are hoping you’ll take gold at next year’s Asian Games. Do you have plans for military service?
Not yet. There are seniors who went later than my age, and I still want to keep playing as an active player. Even if I compete in the Asian Games, it won’t be for the purpose of the military—it’ll be to work hard for the win.
Q. Then what about dating? Quite a few players date—does “Sensory” want to?
I do. Everyone I meet says I’m at a great age to date, too. (laughs)
Q. Now I’m curious about your ideal type. Or what style you like?
There isn’t a specific person I point to as an ideal, but I’m a bit particular about style. I’d like it if they were as good at games as I am, and if possible, I’d like black hair. Black hair looks really pretty to me. (laughs) I’d also like them to be on the taller side. And I like someone who listens to me well and has a crisp, decisive personality.
Q. So both looks and personality matter.
If I have to weigh those two, I think personality is more important. I like someone kind. The kind of person who, when it’s snowing, can tilt their umbrella toward the other person. (laughs)
Q. If someone like that appeared, would you be willing to start dating anytime?
Yes. Of course, it would only be possible if they liked me too. (laughs)
Q. It won’t be easy to be as good at games as “Sensory.”
I don’t know. I think it’s entirely possible. Every year there are people better than me at Hiore. And there’s no need to limit it to the game Hiore—someone who’s good at all games is even cooler.
Q. If you had to briefly describe your own dating style?
I want to do what the other person likes, together. (laughs) Whatever it is, if we do it together, we’ll be happy.

■ In Closing
Q. You’re heading into the Summer season. How are you spending your days lately?
It’s vacation time, so I’m clearing my head as much as possible and focusing on rest. If I rest properly now, I’ll have the strength to run without problems in Summer.
Q. Can we look forward to good form in this Summer season and the Hold Cup in the fall?
Yes. I’ll do my best so viewers won’t be disappointed.
Q. Lastly, anything you’d like to say to those reading this interview?

I scrolled down the community comments on my phone screen and snorted. I wondered why someone suddenly sent me so many links.
Kang Ji-ye had sent me several links early in the morning: Sensory’s interview and community posts. Thanks to that, I got an entertaining spectacle the moment I opened my eyes, so I sent back a reply full of sincerity.

There wasn’t a shred of effort in it, but anyway, it was sincere. I turned off the phone screen, set it down by my pillow, and lowered my head.
Light beige hair was scattered over my shoulder. When I reached out and smoothed the hair, a soft sensation met my fingers.
“Mmm……”
At my hand stroking his hair, Yoo Chae squirmed and snuggled deeper into my arms. The corners of my mouth lifted on their own at that.
“Yoo Chae.”
“……”
“Yoo Jeong.”
“……”
“I know you’re awake.”
Keeping his eyes firmly closed, he twitched his long lashes at my words. Then, like a sleepy child, he rubbed his face against my shoulder.
“Jihan……”
“Did you sleep well?”
I raised my body and pressed my lips to his cheek.
Smack, a ticklish sound rang out. He opened his eyes and giggled at the peck.
“Yeah. How about you?”
“I slept well. Hold on. I’ll toast some bread.”
As I started to get out of bed, he wrapped both arms around my waist. Hugging me with surprising strength, he spoke with a face so white and clear you wouldn’t think he’d just woken up.
“I’ll do it later. Let’s lie down a little longer. Yeah?”
Meeting those bright, sparkling eyes head-on, I was bewitched and lay back down with him.
Well, I didn’t have any plans today anyway, so it was fine to take it easy.
As I lay obediently beside him, he stuck to me snugly, a satisfied smile filling the corners of his mouth. I let out a helpless laugh at the sight.
“Happy?”
“Yeah.”
“I was going to make breakfast because I thought you might be hungry.”
“I like lying here with you more.”
Looking at him holding me with a happy expression, I thought, who cares about breakfast. I, too, loved this warm body heat.
I took his right hand and gently kissed the back of it.
It was a peaceful morning at the start of a new day.
